This is what Session said, notice the first part. His state is this, he have never met with any Russian, and to discuss with them the issues of the presidental campaign. The statement is only true if both clause is true. Meaning, if he have met with any Russian in any capacity, then he would have been lying.

Had he said "I have never met with any Russian OR discuss the issues of the campaign, then he would not be in this mess.
