But we seem to finally be returning to 60's and 70's. when sometime multiple generation aircraft were in production at the same time

No, we are not the Russian, where everything can swim underwater, Mi-24 Hind-E helicopter, BMP-2, T-72s Tanks, even Guided Missile Cruiser, Barge, Troop Transport and Tug boat.

It's a very amazing development for the Russian.
