The Uragan-1M (Hurricane-1M) is a recent Russian artillery rocket system. It was developed to replace both the ageing Uragan 220 mm system that was adopted back in 1975, andSmerch 300 mm system that was adopted in 1987. Both of these systems are extremely capable and are widely used by the Russian Army. However these become increasingly hard to maintain and keep in operational service due to their age. Especially the Uragan. Production of its ZiL-135LMP wheeled chassis stopped years ago. Development of the Uragan-1M commenced in 1995, however in 1996 it was stopped due to funding problems. Development of this system was rather slow. Pictures of the Uragan-1M surfaced only a couple of years ago. Since 2012 this artillery system was trialed by the Russian MoD. It successfully passed trials in 2015. It was first publicly revealed in 2016. By 2017 this system was still evaluated by the Russian Army and was not yet adopted to service. Though it might become operational in the near future.
This artillery rocket system is extremely effective against area targets, such as concentration of troops and armored vehicles, artillery batteries, airfields. A full salvo of a single launcher covers an area of up to 67 hectares.
The Uragan-1M is a multi-caliber system. It can carry 2 pods with various rockets. This system and can launch rocket with various calibers, including pods with 300 mm rockets of the Smerch and 220 mm rockets of the Uragan. It can fire all current Smerch and Uragan rockets. Pods with launch tubes are disposable and are replaced after all rockets are launched. Though there were also developed reusable 300 mm launcher packs that can be reloaded with individual rockets by a reloading vehicle in field conditions. The launcher vehicle of the Uragan-1M is referred as 9A53.
The new system has two pods with a total of 12 launching tubes for 300 mm rockets. In this configuration it has the same firepower as the Smerch artillery rocket system. Alternatively the launcher vehicle can carry two pods with a total of 30 smaller 220 mm rockets. In this configuration the Uragan-1M has nearly twice the power of the original Uragan, which carries 16 rockets. The rocket pods are factory fitted and sealed for easier transportation, storage and faster reloading. The Uragan-1M is capable of firing single rockets, partial ripples or full salvos.
A standard 300 mm rocket is 7.6 m long and weights 800 kg. Warhead weights 280 km. A number of warheads are available, including HE-FRAG, fuel-air explosive, incendiary, cluster with anti-personnel and anti-tank submunitions or self-guided anti-tank munitions. Maximum range of fire is 70 km with ordinary and 90 km with extended-range rockets. Some sources report that the Uragan-1M can also use newly-developed 300 mm rockets with a maximum range of 120 km. A full salvo of two 300 mm pods covers an area of up to 67 hectares.
A standard 222 mm rocket is 4.8 m long and weights 280 kg. Warhead weight is 90-100 kg, depending on the type. A number of warheads are available including training, HE-FRAG, chemical, incendiary, fuel-air explosive, cluster rockets with scatterable anti-tank or anti-personnel mines. These are used for remote mine laying. Also there are leaflet dispensing rockets. Maximum range of fire with 222 mm rockets is up to 34 km. A full salvo of two 220 mm pods covers an area of 8 hectares.
This artillery rocket system is operated by a crew of 3. It takes around 3 minutes to prepare the Uragan-1M for firing. It takes the same amount of time to leave the firing position. Brief redeployment time allows to avoid counter-battery fire. Rockets are launched directly form the cab, or remotely form the vehicle.
The Uragan-1M is based on a Belarusian MZKT-7930 special wheeled chassis with 8x8 configuration. Vehicle is powered by a YaMZ-846 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 500 hp. Vehicle has an armored cab, which provides some degree of protection for the crew. Originally this artillery rocket system was planned to be based on a Russian BAZ-6910 special wheeled chassis with 8x8 configuration, however instead a Belarusian chassis was eventually selected.
The Uragan-1M launcher is escorted by an associated reloading vehicle, which is referred as 9T249. It is based on the same MZKT-7930 8x8 heavy high mobility chassis. It is fitted with a crane and carries pods with reload rockets. Reloading usually takes place away from firing positions in order to avoid counter-battery fire.
