Air Marshal RKS Bhadauria, AVSM, VM, Dy. Chief of the Air Staff, flew the upgraded Jaguar DARIN-III twin-seat aircraft at HAL airport recently and announced satisfactory completion of Initial Operation Clearance (IOC) of Jaguar DARIN III Upgrade. Wg. Cdr. V. Prabhakaran, Test Pilot, ASTE was his co-pilot.

Reacting to the development, Mr. T. Suvarna Raju, CMD, HAL said the aircraft is now equipped with world class avionics system. Air Marshal Bhadauria congratulated all those involved in achieving this milestone and said the DARIN III Upgrade is one of best upgrades in terms of data handling and overall capabilities.

The total design and development covering system requirement capture, specification preparation, software, hardware, electrical and mechanical design and development were carried out indigenously at HAL’s Mission & Combat System Research & Design Centre (MCSRDC) and aircraft modification was done at Overhaul Division, added Mr. Raju.

Mr D.K Venkatesh, Director (Engg. and R & D), Mr. R Kaveri Renganathan, CEO (BC), Air Vice Marshal Sandeep Singh, AVSM, VM, Commandant ASTE and other senior executives witnessed the flight. Besides HAL, certification agencies, trial team of ASTE and other agencies were involved in the upgrade programme. Three DARIN I Standard Jaguars have been upgraded to DARIN III Standard by HAL.

The upgrade incorporates new state of the art avionics architecture including the Open System Architecture Mission Computer (OSAMC), Engine & Flight Instrument System (EFIS), Fire Control Radar, State of the Art Inertial Navigation System with GPS and Geodetic height correction, Solid State Digital Video Recording System (SSDVRS), Solid State Flight Data Recorder (SSFDR), Smart Multi-Function Display (SMD), Radio Altimeter with 20000 ft range, Autopilot with Alt Select & HNAV and Identification of Friend or Foe (IFF).

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has carried out the maiden flight of avionics-upgraded Jaguar aircraft ‘Darin III.’

“This is significant moment for HAL as the upgrade will result in major operational improvement with regard to all-weather air-to-ground, air-to-sea and air-to-air capabilities through the incorporation of multi-mode radar,” said Dr R. K. Tyagi, Chairman, HAL.

The aircraft upgrade incorporates new avionics architecture including mission computer (MC), engine and flight instrument system (EFIS), solid state digital video recording system (SSDVRS), solid state flight data recorder (SSFDR) and additional functions in inertial global positioning system (INGPS), autopilot, radar and RWR.

The upgrade also covers modern navigation, EW and weapon delivery system, with INGPS using primary and reversionary modes, man-machine interface (near glass cockpit), with two smart multi-function display and head-up display.

The HAL release said the total design from system requirement capture, specification preparation, software, hardware, electrical, mechanical design and development has been done indigenously by HAL at its Mission and Combat System Research & Design Centre (MCSRDC).

The aircraft trial modification is done by HAL’s Overhaul Division. The fleet compliance will also be carried out by HAL.

DARIN-III avionics upgrade (with Fire Control Radar and near Glass Cockpit with two Smart Multi-Function Displays and Engine & Flight Instrumentation System, integrated around an advanced Mission Computer on DARIN Jaguar aircraft for improved operational capabilities.

Jaguar DARIN-III Upgrade :
MCSRDC has taken up upgrade of Display Attack Ranging and Inertial Navigation (DARIN) standard Jaguar Aircraft to DARIN III standard. The upgrade includes indigenous Open System Architecture Mission Computer (OSAMC), near Glass Cockpit (Two Smart Multifunction Displays, HUD, Engine & Flight Instrument System and CDU), Solid State Digital Video Recording System, Fire Control Radar, EW Suite, Autopilot along with Contemporary systems such as RLG-INGPS, Digital Map Generator, Wide angle FOV HUD of DARIN II platform. The upgrade will enhance mission & operational capability, lethality and survivability of the Jaguars during deep penetration attacks.

MCSRDC has taken up design and development of OSAMC for Jaguar DARIN-III aircraft. This indigenously designed & developed Mission Computer controls all the sensors placed in the avionics network and performs the navigation and weapon guidance functions. The Mission Computer commands and controls the functioning of Jaguar avionics through a MIL-1553B digital bus network; performs Man Machine Interface through Cockpit controls, Head-Up & Head Down display through Cockpit controls, Head-Up & Head Down display management, System Mode Management & Redundancy Management. The Mission Computer Software (Operational Flight Program) developed for Mission Computer of DARIN-II has been successfully flight tested & inducted in the Jaguar fleet of IAF and has been hailed by the User as the most user-friendly with state-of-the-art features. The success of this program has been one giant step towards achieving self-reliance in design and development of airborne mission systems and integration of aircraft avionics system.

Jaguar DARIN-II upgrade:
MCSRDC has successfully completed DARIN II (Display Attack Ranging and Inertial Navigation) upgrade of Jaguar aircraft with integration of indigenously developed Mission Computer, Navigation system, Communication systems, Electro-optics, Electronic Counter Measures and new weapons. The upgrade with Improved Mission capabilities was tested for precision weapon delivery to the full satisfaction of the customer and certified.

Integration of EW suite RWR/SPJ/CMDS, Auto pilot, LDP, VOR/ILS/TACAN, Reconnaissance system, Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation system, New Generation Laser Guided Bombs, Auto Pilot (for controlling the aircraft pitch and roll to achieve the task), Helmet Mounted Display System, Multi Input Audio Warning system (provides an synthesized audio warning and flashing light warning message), Flap warning system (for providing audio and visual warning to the pilot in the cockpit), Helmet Mounted Display System on Jaguar aircraft.

Based on a fatigue analysis, the IAF estimates that Jaguars could remain operational till 2030. The service has drawn up an upgrade program under which the aircraft will be re-engined and re-equipped with fourth-generation cockpit and mission avionics, and self protection suite.

Upgraded Jaguars will feature all weather precision attack capability with enhanced weapon load.

Weapon Fit Upgrade

Jaguar avionics are being upgraded to employ 'smart' or 'advanced' weapons like the Joint Standoff Weapon, Maverick missile, Paveway precision-guided munition and AIM-9M Sidewinder air-to-air missile.

IAF contracted Raytheon to develop a Munitions Control Unit (MCUs) that would allow its Darin II equipped Jaguars to use the smart weapons with minimal to no modifications to aircraft wiring and the flight or stores management software.

Raytheon developed an MCU measuring 13 by 6 by 3 inches that weighs roughly 6 pounds. It's compact enough to be fitted in a weapons pylon or Jaguar's avionics bay, from where it interfaces between "smart" weapons and the existing software of a legacy aircraft.

Orders are now being placed for the MCUs.

Engines Procurement for Upgraded Jaguars

In November 2010, the IAF issued an RFP for the supply of 280 turbofans (including 40 spare engines) for re-engining IAF Jaguars.

In response, Rolls-Royce offered its Adour MK-821 engine, an upgraded version of the Adour-811, and Honeywell its F125IN Turbofan engine that currently powers Taiwan's Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation-built Ching-Kuo Indigenous Defense Fighter.

The Honeywell F125IN has a max thrust of 43.8kN, and the Rolls-Royce Adour Mk811, 32.5kN.

According to Honeywell, F125IN is 267.6kg (590lb) lighter than the Adour-811 currently fitted on the Jaguar. The F125IN has 17% and 40% higher thrust that will allow the Jaguar to carry an additional 2-tons.

Rolls-Royce says its Adour Mk-821 will be a lower-risk upgrade that will offer 90% commonality with the Adour Mk951 turbofan fitted on BAE Systems/HAL Hawk Mk132. The upgraded engine will off er 20% increase in thrust

Both engines feature Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC)

However, Rolls-Royce pulled out of the competition in March 2011 creating a single vendor situation and forcing cancellation of the tender.

HAL has accumulated a high degree of expertise on the Jaguar, having manufactured many, overhauled the entire fleet and developed world-class navigational-attack systems (termed DARIN 2 and DARIN 3) that allow pilots to fly blind to a target hundreds of kilometres away, and release their bombs precisely.


The Jaguar is also being equipped with lethal Textron CBU-105 “sensor fuzed weapons”, which the IAF procured in 2010 through the US government. This weapon, which is usually delivered over enemy tank concentrations, breaks up into a large number of smart “bomblets”, which guide themselves to the tanks and penetrate their turrets from above.

The Sensor Fuzed Weapon is capable of defeating a wide range of moving and stationary military targets. It is effective against land threats such as wheeled and tracked vehicles up to Main Battle Tank (MBT), armored vehicles, missile and rocket launchers, radar sites and parked aircraft.


A 1,000-pound class weapon, SFW contains 10 BLU-108 Submunitions – each with four smart Skeet™warheads, for a total of 40 warheads. One SFW can detect and engage many fixed and moving targets simultaneously within 121,400-square-meters (30 acres). While providing wide-area coverage, SFW has demonstrated an ability to function in a countermeasures environment, at night and under adverse weather conditions.

AERDC is a R&D wing of Design Complex, HAL playing a vital role in the design and development of Gas Turbine Engines in India.

The Centre started functioning in the year 1960 as a hub of engine research and development with the aim of achieving self reliance in design and development of Gas Turbine Engines and Test Beds in a climate of growing professional competence.

The Hindustan Jet Engine or HJE-2500 project was the first jet engine design and development project in the country taken up by the Centre. A prototype engine was successfully developed and proven on the test bed in 1965 and was proposed for the HJT -16 aircraft. The centre also designed and type certified a piston engine and other engine accessories including a pneumatic starter and hydraulic pump in its early days. The centre also has the unique distinction of being the only design house which has developed test beds for both Western as well as Russian origin engines.

The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has put the Engine Division in Koraput

“In the last 50 years, we have manufactured 1574 engines and overhauled 7417 engines

Since inception, the division has manufactured and overhauled R-25, R-29B, RD-33 and AL-31FP engines to power the MiG-21 series, MiG-27M, MiG-29 and Su-30 MKI aircraft.

The division has also set up a test bed for AL-55I engines for the Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT). It has already established a facility for production of single crystal blades for Sukhois, which can further support India’s missile and unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) programmes.

The division has been on the threshold of successfully launching home-grown solutions while overhauling the RD-33 (Series-3) engines of MiG 29 fighters. “There was no ToT (transfer of technology) with Russians for six uncommon aggregators (accessories) of the RD-33 (Series-3) engines. The ToT was getting delayed as the Russians were demanding additional funds.

The ToT would have come only by 2016, prompting us to initiate the indigenous programme,” says Arup Chatterjee, Officiating Chief of Project (Engines), while interacting with the media.

He said the IAF had bought over 100 engines from the Russians in 2007. “With the engines started coming for overhaul, we developed technologies for three out of the six uncommon aggregators successfully. The remaining three are targeted to be developed within HAL by June 2015. This has given us self-confidence for meeting our indigenous missions,” Chatterjee added.





“The division has so far manufactured close to 280 engines (AL-31FP) for the Sukhois, while around 158 have been overhauled. The first engine from the raw material phase was rolled out during 2011-12. We are also fully equipped for the long testing (three months) of Sukhoi engines,” says Rajaram.

The TBO (Time Between Overhaul) of a Sukhoi engine is 1000 hours, while the total lifespan of an engine is 2000 hours. HAL hopes that it will be able to generate more employment when the Indo-Russian Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) project takes a firm shape.

I thought we were suppose to upgrade to American engines?

India and US are working on the framework under which jet engine technology can be manufactured in India.

Kaveri Engine was supposed to be first turbofan engine acclimatized for operations in Indian weather conditions so most likely India will offer its part of Research carried out on Kaveri engine.

For India, they will get a new engine without much of the investment or time delays expected if we had gone for new further development of Kaveri engine.

AMCA India’s 5th-generation fighter jet programme which has completed its final design stage will require 115 kN thrust producing new engines


New F414-EDE or F414-EPE engines will also be able to meet requirements of AMCA fighter jet and coming from the same F414 family means same engines can be used to upgrade Tejas MK-II or it’s newer variants later in the future . F414 EDE is billed as an upgrade – not a new center-line engine – but it promises significant performance improvement which will improve fuel efficiency, while F414-EPE involves much deeper design changes including new core which will a ideal project which will excite Indian scientist .

Wonder how important an AESA radar is for a strike plane with less than 15-20 years life.
