Update of FATF Meeting: Outcomes FATF Plenary, 21-23 February 2018

I am old enough to see through the era of Afgan war in 1990 and Kashmir insurgency in 1980's too... My issue is not with rivalry with Pakistan, but our rivalry should be respectable in nature rather than just immature nation....

Indian media is not one publication but multiple. Each of these publications had one article on the matter which is usually the norm anywhere. Just because you had more exposure on the issue because of PDF doesn't mean India or Indian media is going overboard. Heck outside of PDF indians, this is a non issue. As for reporting before the meeting ended goes WSJ or reuters also done the same and yet to be proved wrong.

India should not react anything to this issue...Why should we be happy to any thing which has not been done for us?? We have to come out of this mentality of everything wrong with Pakistan should be celebrated..In one way, we are looking ourseleves as a leader of Asia but in another way, we are just behaving like a cry baby who just feel happy that his rival got punished by someone else, because we can not do it...

And see the amount of desperation in our media...Even without any confirmation, TOI is just cofirming that it has been done...
“Respectable rivalry”is not how the Indo-Pak relationship can be defined. You keep using these terms like valueless and respect - how you are acting so ignorant is beyond me. Nothing is respectable or morally correct about our both of our current situations. Wars have been fought, thousands have died on both sides, so much blood has been shed on both sides. This region is one of the most militarized borders in the world, and also a possible nuclear flashpoint. And you talk about being respectful rivals? Go look up what a rivalry is bud.
Often we see actual military action, and threats of war against these non state actors and as a result loss of life occurs on both sides. This has had no drastic affect on Pakistan. However- the sort of punishment we are discussing here is what might push their establishment into action.
We have suffered plenty because of these “intifadas”.

hmmm

india should be on the list.

this is just a political by USA and India.. they are free not to export us their junk movies or use our airspace

New Delhi: The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) in its latest meeting in Paris has decided to put Pakistan on a “grey list” for not taking adequate action against proscribed terrorist entities and individuals.

The motion, brought forth by the United States, was supported by countries like UK, France, and India. The FATF voted 36 to 1 to grey list Pakistan.

The only country that voted in favour of Pakistan was Turkey. Not even traditional friends and allies like China and Turkey voted in favour of Pakistan.

This will make it difficult for international financial institutions and banks to do business in Pakistan. Conversely, it will also make it difficult for Pakistani businesses to raise money overseas.

Pakistan will also find it hard to service its debt obligations. Pakistan has about 300 billion dollars of sovereign debt which it needs to service by the end of June, failing which it could be in for a sovereign ratings downgrade by international rating agencies like S& P Moody’s and Fitch.

Domestically, opposition parties the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) are expected to use this development to attack the ruling PML(N)and its failure to convince the international body. It could also have a negative effect on the PML (N) in the upcoming general elections.

There was a report on Friday that China, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, three close allies of Pakistan, have joined hands to block a move by the Trump administration to place Islamabad on an international terror-financing watch list.

While Pakistan has claimed a victory of sorts, the US was working behind the scenes during the ongoing Paris meeting of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to take action against the country which it believes has not acted against terrorist financing and the implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions.

Shortly before the meeting in Paris, Pakistan, which was to provide a report on its crackdown on terrorism, had attempted to take desperate last-minute action against 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed's JuD and FIF organisations.

Here's what Indian government sources said to Republic TV about the development:

"We welcome this move by FATF to put Pakistan in the terror financing global list. This has happened on expected lines and comes as a huge embarrassment to Pakistan.

FATF move vindicates India’s stand that Pakistan has been aiding, abetting and financing terrorism against India. The global community needs to realise that Pakistan has been sponsoring terror against its neighbours and using it as a state policy. Global diplomatic steps like these to crush terror important in the war against terror."

The US' move to put Pakistan on the FATF watchlist was foreshadowed by a number of actions by the Trump administration. On the first day of 2018, the US president had launched a scathing and stunning Twitter attack on Pakistan, calling it out for its "lies and deceit" with regards to clamping down on terror and calling an end to military aid to the country. Accordingly, the US administration suspended aid worth about $2 billion to Pakistan. Then, on January 24, the US launched a massive drone strike on Pakistani soil near the border with Afghanistan targeting leaders of the Haqqani network. Another drone strike followed on February 8.

What a major embarrassment for Pakistan and Khwaja Asif if this news is confirmed later in the day. And if China has not supported Pakistan then thats a huge double whammy!

Read the dawn report shared above, yes Pakistan doesn't feature on the press release and current list as it will be placed in June 2018, your own media and officials have given the said confirmation. Another stick for the US to beat Pakistan with.

There is a difference between you 'may' be placed and you 'will' be placed, in Pakistan's case it is you will be placed. The interesting part is China and Saudi staying neutral and not opposing USA's second motion. So much for investment and troops deployment!

Dude we will survive that as well since in June our allies can vote/lobby against it as well just like now. US desperately wanted to put Pakistan on the list now but didn't so they asked our allies for a second voting move for June consideration which they agree, provided we failed to align ourselves in conjecture to fatf regulations. 3 months time are enough to further sort out things at our end which FM earlier talked about since he knew whole back door diplomacy.

No it is very much likely we won't be placed in june as well since decision will only be made that time not before (feb).

Also it will hurt Pakistan economically only when if we are black listed.nothing happens if u r in grey list and u can be off the list as early as 3 months.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Pakistan will get on to the list from June 2018. They have time until then to make changes in their actions against terror groups
  • That is why, Pakistan is not mentioned in the final statement by FATF today but will be put on the list at the next plenary which is in June, sources said.
what is point of putting Pak on that list in June ? obviously they have given us time otherwise Pakistan would have been put on grey list after this moot... they did the voting and won and are still gonna put us on the list in June .. interesting why wait till June ...
