UNSC seat: US throws water over India's hopes

It will definitely take time .But that does not mean that India will never be a member.India deserves to be a member of the SC with or without veto.

Are you saying that as long as a country has a big population then she qualifies for a Permanent U.N. seat ?

Tell us what can India do for the world that other countries cannot ?

Japan, Germany and Brazil are far richer than India and can use their
wealth to help many poor countries around the world while we doubt
that India can match that !!!

a country's wealth is not the criteria for membership .
china was much much poorer than india is today when it got the seat.

use some logic.

Brazil is not far richer than India.Brazil also has a lot of poor people and is a developing country just like India.

Those 1,139,964,93 in the form of India has been violating UN laws without feeling the responsibility of their large size. Even if China has been violator to the level you are today, it mustn't have got the place it enjoys today.

A food for memories.. India is still to follow UN resolutions on Kashmir before it would imagine to be a protector of its resolutions and be awarded a greater role. So act before you expect.

As far "Need" of UN is concerned, its Indian need more than UN's. UN is not disfunctional without you sitting on its veto seat.

you need to know that there is a difference between laws and UN resolutions.

the resolution regarding kashmir were non-binding on India.

Indian did mot break any international law.

Just trying to calm people who got excited after Obama's speech. The message is still the same.
Wanted to assure Brazil, Germany, SA and Japan.
Also wanted to calm Jana.

I did not know i was so important and notorious that US has to come up with official statement to calm me

The heading is misleading and the article only suggests what most Indians know , getting the seat will take many years and India alone will not be the only new member .

The expansion will include other new countries as well .

what does this article say that we didn't know already ?:)

Japan, Germany and Brazil also form G4 with us meaning that if any one of us get into the veto group, we shall push for others to join the brigade. Of these, Brazil strongly deserves a place to represent South America and also South Africa to represent African continent. Even they know that if we get in, we can help them come aboard.

FYI the UNSC reforms aim at P5+3 countries. :)

UNSC doesn't give aid handouts to the world, just in case you didn't know. IMF and WB give that to the countries. Other than that, it is not a security council decision if each of its members individually hand over monetary assistance to other countries.

Speaking of monetary assistance, why don't you check our development work in Africa, Afghanistan, Bhutan etc? It is just a start. Give it time. When China joined the UNSC in 70s, it was also not in a good shape. Can the same be said now?

Bro, we need to secure a favourable environment in the UNSC before we can make a bid. For that we need another decade or so of rapid economic, military and political advancement so that we actually get noticed more seriously. As such a large number of UN non-members also favour our getting into the UNSC apart from now 4 of 5 members.

So the more goodwill we create through our soft power image in some more time, the more we will inch closer to the seat. But right now, at least till 2025, we aren't "there" yet. We need more reforms, more transparency internally, pull our more people out of poverty, crush terrorism and stuff before we can be a mature power.

Thanks what I like about you jana.. you give Indian sources for such stories..

If india gets veto then Japan and Germany wont sit idle wearing bangles..Turks will demand a place as well...as a power established back in WW2 and there should be a muslim bloc country too!

For United Nation Security Council reform, first a resolution will have to passed United Nation general assembly requiring 129(out of 191) votes in its favor.

Then this resolution will have to passed by Security council on the basis of majority and without being vetoed.

So it is long process though India as of now enough commitment(votes) with it to pass through general assembly, it needs to work on to powering through Security council especially not being vetoed there.

There is already a group of countries, that shot down the last attempt of UN reform, it was led by Pakistan and Italy, these countries contended that the P5 and the veto, were discriminatory of the General Assembly, who have had their votes vetoed by the p5 particularly the ones by the US regarding Israel.

By the way, all P5 countries have agreed amongst themselves that if there is an expansion, it will not have a veto, they are not willing to share that privilege.

There are also problems for india, Japan - the Chinese could potentially veto, any candidature. South Africa - has rivals in Egypt and Nigeria - who also claim they should be members of the security council. Argentina has vociferously opposed Brazil's candidature, with other South American countries supporting it.

Conclusion

There is no consensus for UN reform, probably won't be done in our lifetime.

It can create jobs in the US....have you been living under a rock Maiser?

Besides...we have done our share in building the poor nations....
1.5Billion in development to Afghanistan....
$2 Billion in loans to BD at extremely competitive interest rates....\
Close to $25MM in flood relief to Pakistan in their time of need....

And that is just the tip of the iceberg....

I think we have proven ourselves economically.....need I elaborate on why our military power adds to this....and lastly, yes...the voice of 1/3rd of humanity does hold weight....

This IMO - is what is wrong with india's thinking, you have a raging Naxalite insurgency that is active in 1/3 of your districts, there main demand amongst others is that india does nothing for the poor.

Until this and other core problems are not addressed, the membership of the security council is a mirage and a wishful dream.
