Only 19 ships in Navy..

Maybe they are tightening the belt now so they can spend on the F-35 later. I suspect they are replacing all their fighters with F-35 apart from operational typhoons.

I find it to be a bit shocking as well.

I think the source is the political pressure to provide extensive social services, which are extraordinarily expensive, and can dwarf military budgets. The trend in too many nations (IMO) is a sense of entitlement by all citizens for cradle to grave care in such a number of ways.

well they are all part of the NATO...protected diplomatically and militarily by Uncle Sam's muscle....hence they can afford such luxurys unlike us......

Yeah, there is no immediate threat to them unlike India, Pakistan who have to keep large armies to maintain the status quo. Being part of NATO brings a certain level of safety that most countries would dream to have.

you are forgetting, most of this "money" ..does not exist.

it is ...fictional money, it only exists in some computer as returns of investment, holdings of hedge funds and gross or net supposed profits of banks.. it is not real money..

e.g. if I owe the bank 100.000 for my mortgage the bank can put that in its portofolio, however i only ever made two payments.. so the bank actually has 1600, not 100000...

it's all the rotten hyper capitalist crap ...

RAF is only getting rid of it's harrier jets which are old and outdated, BUT 160 Eurofighters, F-35s and tornadoes and enough for Britain.

The tiny amounts of tanks is not really a problem as Britain is an island and tanks can't swim

19 ships is really not enough, but 2 of these will be aircraft carriers with F-35s.

and 250 nukes are more than enough.

As far as defence goes, Britain is pretty well defended but with such a smaller armed forces, wars like Iraq and Afghanistan look unlikely.

their is no problems,sometimes i think that we they r keeping such a large force,they have hardly any voice left in the world stage,no more a super power,no more personal conflicts,their economy is also in strain,they r at present scenario nothing more than a subsidiary of America

Their is no problem with a 40 billion pound budget,i dont think they even require this,they should b more focused on homeland security

Britain possibly occupies the safest position in the european continent, away from africa, eastern europe and middle east with lots of buffers. They just need to look out for terrorism.
