  • A 1-month-old baby girl was strangled by her father in Karnataka's Chikmagalur
  • The father, Manjunath, was unhappy with a girl child
  • An astrologer advised him to kill his daughter for better fortune

The father of a one-month-old baby girl in Karnataka's Chikmagalur was strangled by her father who was unhappy on fathering a girl child. He was apparently advised by an astrologer to kill the child to have better fortune.

According to a report in The News Minute, the accused, who has been identified as Manjunath, had frequent arguments with his wife over the newborn. He has been arrested after his wife lodged a complaint with the police.

The baby was named Niharika.

On Tuesday, when his wife was busy with household chores and other family members went out for work, Manjunath grabbed the opportunity to kill his daughter. He strangled his baby with bare hands and then went back to sleep to pretend that he was unaware of her death.

Later when his wife came inside the house she saw blood oozing out of the newborn's nose and she had stopped breathing.

She immediately woke up her husband who said he was not aware of anything as he was sleeping and feeling unwell.

A doctor declared the baby dead and asked the family to lodge a police complaint as the death was not natural. This prompted neighbours and family members to gather around the house, which further irked Manjunath.

His wife lodged a police complaint against Manjunath and by this time he managed to bury the baby's body in a nearby plot.

After being picked up by the police, Manjunath confessed to the crime and said that an astrologer had advised him to sacrifice the girl child to bring good fortune.

Police have exhumed the body and has started investigation into the matter.

70+ years of "Independence" and yet India has these kinds of problems.

@Nilgiri , you were criticising Socialism in the other thread.

. . .
Well, if not this type, Pakistan has other kinds of problems. For example, feudalism and honor killings.

South Asia is not the most evolved of regions.
but killing your own child because an astrologer told you, this is totally different level.

.
with due respect, what Independence has to do with it?

After the British left, Indians had the chance of building an evolved and enlightened society that should have been an example for other countries to follow.

There is a 60s film song -

"Chodo kal ki baatein
kal ki baat puraani
naye daur mey likhenge
milkar nai kahaani
hum Hindustani, hum Hindustani"

Compare the ambitious song to the generally failed reality.

I agree. Which is why I meant that a large part of India is stuck hundreds of years ago.

I think you are mixing up religious practices or believes with culture.
After Independence whatever was not possible to do religiously, became possible and tried to bring back the forgotten or otherwise rituals/believes.

My thoughts, could be totally wrong.

. .
If by honor killing you mean killing your daughter or sister due to her bad character then such type of killings are extremely rare in Pakistan

Well, it is not so hidden and rare either. :)

Do you mean the Brits had banned certain local evil practices ??

What i am saying is, might not be possible under British rule. I do not know if they really banned.

But under hindu Raj and especially when extremist raj is trying to promote Hinduism and ancient vedic practices, definitely give encouragement.

as far as the honor killing is, it again falls under more cultural values then religious, where a pandit cum astrologists dictate.
