Newly appointed coach Duncan Fletcher on Thursday got a taste of the challenges he faces when two senior former players said a fellow countryman should have got the job instead.

Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar, former Indian captains and influential voices in the cricket establishment, expressed displeasure over Fletcher's appointment.

"Who is Duncan Fletcher?" Dev told the Hindustan Times newspaper. "I would like to see Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh (former India players) as coaches of the Indian team. Not because they are Indians but because they did a great job at the T20 World Cup in 2007."

Gary has set a high standard for the position of the coach, it'll hard for anyone to satisfy that standard.

kapil is not welcome in BCCI as his involvment in ZEE-ICL , and Gavaskar has lost his importence with BCCI after he rejected to be part of the IPL governing council o non-payid bases , earlier in latil mode time each governing council member used to get 1cr every year....

these two are now just outside noises which are now trying to get heard to gain some of their lost prestige....

why this talk of indian coach vs foreign coach. a coach wether indian or forign has to deliver. we can all hang duncan if doesnt performs.

I have no problems with a foreign coach. But Duncan Fletcher seems to be a regressive step. I don't regard his tenure with the English team as exceptional.

IMO, someone like Shane Warne or Stephen Fleming would have been perfect for the job....

there were controversies b4 gary also...but he did it
its just not the coach our boys are excellent.

next world cup will be made with the winners name already engraved over it 'INDIA'

This is sad....since the decision is already made...and the guy has been selected, instead of these criticism they should encourage him..moreover, how can you say anything wrong even without him delivering any results yet...wil these guys take their word back and be sorry if this guy repeats what gary did ?? atleast they should wait and see how he performs.

absolutely right bro.

Duncan doesn't have a good track record of motivating players after a defeat, as was evident during his stint as England coach.
