Undisclosed buyer emerges for Saab 2000 AEW&C

An undisclosed customer has ordered a Saab 2000 airborne early warning and control system in a deal worth more than $670 million.

Saab says its customer has asked not to be identified, and notes that such information "cannot always be published" in the defence market.

"This surveillance system will provide the customer with improved solutions for defence and civil security," says Saab chief executive Håkan Buskhe.

The deal means a second customer will join Pakistan in operating the Saab Microwave Systems Erieye radar-equipped Saab 2000 AEW&C. Islamabad has so far received two of its four aircraft, plus one without a radar to support training activities, says Flightglobal's MiliCAS database.

The newly ordered system will involve the refurbishment of one of about 56 existing Saab 2000s. The deal also includes ground equipment and logistics and support services, the company says.

The Erieye radar has previously been ordered by Sweden, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates on the Saab 340 turboprop. The same sensor also equips modified Embraer ERJ-145s for Brazil, Greece and Mexico.

Naaa, it was me I personally bought it, I have plenty of money to burn. So why not buy a AEW&C, possibly the other reason is I want to know what's going on at me neighbors house, their Chinese..

Or may be its another popularity stunt by SAAB.

Saab’s Mysterious S-2000 AEW&C Customer
04-Oct-2010

In early October 2010, Saab Group announced an SEK 4.5 billion (about $671.5 million) contract to supply its Saab 2000 airborne early warning and control system (AEW&C), which includes “a Saab 2000 aircraft” (singular), to an undisclosed customer.

With its latest announcement of a Saab 2000 ERIEYE airborne early warning and control system sale, Saab has taken another step toward a position as a leading global supplier of mid-tier AEW&C surveillance. Several mysteries remain, however:At present, competitors at the high end of the market include derivatives of the 707-based E-3 Sentry, Boeing’s modern E-767 that serves with Japan, the E-737 ordered by Australia, South Korea, and Turkey; and IAI’s Phalcon system which has been installed in 707, IL-76, and G550 jets.

Northrop Grumman’s E-2 Hawkeye turboprop is the lone carrier-capable system, and also serves as a shorter range mid-tier system for Egypt, France, Japan, Mexico, and Taiwan. Unseating the E-2, which benefits from large US Navy sales, is no easy task. Nevertheless, Saab has now received complete AEW&C turboprop orders from Sweden, Pakistan, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates; and supplied its fixed ERIEYE AESA radar and related systems for use on Embraer’s ERJ145-based R-99/EMB-145 AEW&C planes in Brazil, Greece, and Mexico.

The firm continues to look for new customers, and rising wealth outside of North America and Europe is creating opportunities.

Assuming that the announcement is not misleadingly worded, the discrepancy between the announcement of a single aircraft, and the contract’s price relative to similar orders in the past, suggests a new customer. It also suggests either an accompanying command and control system, extensive maintenance contracts, or both. The secrecy and amounts do create some mystery, because there are a limited number of customers that can afford it, are interested in equipment like this, and can keep a buy of this size undisclosed. Most of them are Middle Eastern countries. This kind of contract would suit Saudi Arabia very well, for instance, but the country already operates a fleet of E-3s. Malaysia is interested in aircraft like Saab’s, but the deal’s amount would make it hard to keep under wraps there.
