29th May 2013.UN is observing Peacekeeper's Day. Total 67 UN peacekeeping operations are undertaken since the first supervision of the 1948 truce between Arab states and Israel. A total 112,776 peacekeepers from 116 countries are currently working in the UNs 16 missions in four continents.
Let us see the contribution of Bangladesh:
1. In 1988, Bangladesh first joined the UN peacekeeping mission with only 15 military observers. So far 1,07,487 members of Bangladesh Armd Forces joined in 40 different UN missions.This year, Bangladesh has stepped into 25th year of participation .
2. As of May 2013, there are 8,826 Bangladeshi soldiers and officers serving the UN.(600 will join soon)
3. Bangladeshi army General led the peacekeeping mission in Mozambique in 1994,in Georgia in 2002 and in Liberia 2009.
4. As of 01 April 2013, a total of 91 brave peacekeepers from Bangladesh died while 139 are injured.
5. Til May 2012 Bangladesh provided three Bell-22 helicopters, six MI-17 helicopter, one C-130 transport aircraft, a Frigate and an Off-shore Patrol Vessel to the UN for peacekeeping purpose.
6. Bangladesh has earned the position of the Chair of the UN Peace-building Commission and the Membership of Peace-Building Fund.
7. Approximately Bangladesh Army has earned 11,439 Crore Taka for UN reimbursement
8. Ameera Haq, A Bangladeshi is serving UN as USG (DFS) and expected to be next and first women SG
