Now South Korean citizens enjoy higher quality of life than the Japanese. Considering that since 90s Japan has been falling in the ranking and Korea climbing we can assume that the gap is only going to get bigger

(Sorry I can't post links here yet because of insufficient number of posts)

Previously the Japanese government predicted that Japan will lose its developed nation status by 2060.

Japan is in serious trouble. Consumption Tax is rising, huge debt, not very competitive anymore. I am not surprise their HDI is being surpass by Korea who has a very good trade relationship and earn huge profit trading with China.

.
The newer generation of Japanese are not as hard working and disciplined as their forebears. They don't make them like they used to...

.
Very impressed with S.Korea's growth. It is half the size of Gujarat and making tremendous progress in all fields. Kudos!

.
If japs keeps playing with fire, they will find their country less developed than ethiopia after 1000 nuclear bombs exploding there.

Another Chinese mem promotes using nuclear bomb against neighbor...
@Hu Songshan : pls support to restrain the aggression

It‘s hard to make a prediction. All we know at the moment is Korea is rising up and Japan is falling down

.
One strange thing in the report is that Japan's life expectancy is stated 83.6 but according official estimates it's 84.6 and GNI per capita in PPP terms for Japan is 38k but in the report it's 36 k.

In the field of Robotic, soon China will be the most developed in all three.
This is my prediction.
However, US will be the most develop country in Robotic something like
This is my score for Artificial intelligence field.
US:70 Europe 35 China 20 Japan 10 South Korea 10 points.

Soon you will see small robots of size bees flying in group as a killing weapon.

In Asia, except Singapore and Hong Kong, there is only one truly developed country, that is Japan.

100,000 Koreans work and live in Vietnam, while 100,000 Vietnamese live and work in S Korea, too. What is your point?

the Koreans believe their country is better than China in many aspects. From history to culture to foods to technology. Koreans even believe Confucius came from Korea. No surprise that they look down on you. I just tell you the truth. no offence.

South Koreans look down on us, say Chinese tourists|Society|News|WantChinaTimes.com

No, actually I have no feeling at all to Koreans. I mistake many times the Koreans as Japanese until they open their mouth and speak.

According to 2009 population statistic analysis, 2,489,076 Koreans live in China. Koreans look down upon their own race who come from other countries. Who else would you expect them to respect?

GDP per capita (nominal) according to World Bank 2013

USA: 54980
Japan: 38492
South Korea: 25,977
China: 6,807
Vietnam: 1,911
India: 1499

GDP per capita (PPP) according to World Bank 2013

USA: 53,143
Japan: 36,315
South Korea: 33,140
China: 11,904
India: 5,410
Vietnam: 5,293

I think the living standard of South Korean and Japanese is closer than it appears. On paper, based on exchange rate, South Koreans make a lot less, but that is because the Won has low exchange rate and the Yen has high exchange rate. In PPP terms SK and Japan are pretty close.

In HDI, the way how economist determines whether a country is developed or developing (because it looks at whole picture like education, health, environment, infrastructure, cost of living, income, ect)

USA: 0.914
South Korea: 0.891
Japan: 0.890
China: 0.719
Vietnam: 0.638
India: 0.586

It seems like China has done very well. When the HDI thing just started, China was grouped in the Low HDI with African countries. This is the first year it got placed into the "High HDI" category along with countries like former soviet states, turkey, ect. It will be a while before it can make it to "very high" HDI category along with USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea.

Thanks for the post. I'll also add that it's a lot cheaper to live in S. Korea than in Japan. It is even a trend for Japanese college students who have problems affording Japanese university tuition rates to study in Korea. Before doing so , tho, they have to test for their Korean language proficiency.

Anyways, I'm happy to see that S. Korea is getting up ! Japan and Korea have much to appreciate from each other. The two of us are probably the most closest --- in all things, than any other civilization.

Lastly, there are about 49 million South Koreans, whereas there are over 128 million Japanese. Japan is almost 3x the size of S. Korea. The average Japanese per capita is at $38,000. Whereas South Korea's per capita is at $25,000.

The standard of living , especially the cost, is substantially higher in Japan than in South Korea.

Japan is a dead economy with a declining population with no natural resources.

Japan is irrelevant in the world.
