UN censures Canada for violation of children’s rights

The United Nations has censured the Canadian government for its gross violations of the rights of children and has accused the country of "serious and widespread discrimination” against First Nations children.

On Monday, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) issued its formal report on Canada’s treatment of children and the country’s commitment to the world body’s Convention on the Rights of the Child, Canada's CTV News reported on Tuesday.

The CRC accused Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government of violating the convention by introducing Bill C-10 to the country’s Youth Criminal Justice Act earlier this year.

Bill C-10, which the CRC says does not comply with international standards, allows for harsher penalties for youth offenders and makes it easier for courts to judge them as adults.

The bill "is excessively punitive for children and not sufficiently restorative in nature," said the CRC.

"There is simply no excuse for a government to discriminate against children," the CRC noted.

The report also expressed concern over the Canadian government’s discrimination against its indigenous and black children, who are more likely to be incarcerated than other children.

Many political analysts say that under Stephen Harper’s government, human rights abuses in Canada have increased dramatically.

‘Canada, human rights slaughterhouse’

A political analyst has deplored Canada’s human rights record, holding Ottawa responsible for creating a legion of outrageously-oppressed aboriginal women and children.

In an article published on Press TV website under the title Human rights inferno in Canada on Tuesday, prolific Iranian author and Middle East expert, Dr. Ismail Salami highlighted the country’s age-old record of subjecting aboriginal woman and children to horrendous abuse.

Canada has admitted to “forcing 150,000 aboriginal children into ghastly residential schools where they were abused sexually, psychologically, and physically,” he wrote.

“The concept of assimilation [into mainstream Canadian society as was the reason for the forced placements] was a big lie and the children eventually left schools with a broken spirit and an amputated soul,” Salami asserted.

He cited the case of “sexual terrorist” Arthur Plint, a dorm supervisor, who was accused of 18 counts of sexual assault on children aged six to 16.

The UN has strongly condemned Canada's record on children's rights, and accused Ottawa of systematic discrimination against aborigines and immigrants.

“Canada is the home of serious violations of the human rights of Aboriginal women and girls,” the Iranian expert also wrote, citing rights coalition, the Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action (FAFIA) spokesperson, Sharon McIvor as saying.

More than 600 aboriginal women and young girls are missing in the country amid reports of rape, mutilation, and murder against female aborigines.

Since Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper took power in 2006, activists say there has been a significant rise in human rights violations together with an unprecedented crackdown on freedom of speech.

UN doesn't know anything about Canada probably some anglophone in England wrote this article(, for decades we have funded and promoted aboriginal culture and yet they continue to live on welfare even though they get cheap housing. Its funny how we have ungrateful people like RUSTY, who don't know that his tax dollars pay for aboriginal subsidies and education. Before you call me an ignorant white guy or something,i am 25% or more pakistani(75% quebecois) so that makes me a minority, so dont get the wrong impression that Canadienne are racist as RUSTY's post may imply .(best of both worlds)BTW RUSTY before criticizing our country research first.

Unfortunately your kind of attitude is typical of a lot of Canadians. Especially whites Canadians. You think that after committing Genocide , taking their land, and destroying their culture that everything is okay because you give them a few free classes and don't charge them tax, and that too only on their tiny reserve.

This racist conservative government kicked out Iranian diplomats for "human rights" violations while it has on of the bloodiest recent history and to this day aboriginals get discriminated.

Is this for real? I had a native aboriginal studying in University with me in Engineering in one of the best schools in Canada. The kid had a high school average in the 50% range (while the cut-off for normal students like me was around 85% for the same program), and only got into the University because he was aboriginal. He obviously dropped out in the first semester because the kid could not do basic algebra, much less solving Partial Differential Equations and Triple Integrals which showed up in exams. Also, these guys get paid a monthly allowance from the Govt as well.

If despite getting all these things they can't do anything for themselves, then they only have themselves to blame...

The thing is Canada has done enough for Aboriginals but also has somewhat neglected them. It's a very complex situation. The Aboriginals do get a lot of preferences and perks but at the same time they are marginalized. Their reserves are full of drug addicts, alcoholics and are infested by crime and poverty. It's very saddening to see their situation. As bad as it sounds, these Aboriginals have to stand up and improve their community. No one owes them anything. But their situation is not as bad as the article puts it. Both articles are filled with misinformation.

CBC ARTICLE: Its in anglais so I hope sinochallenger you read this very carefully. If canadienne aboriginals were being prosecuted there population would not surge past the million mark. Think before you post seriously.
Merci.

"Canada's aboriginal population surged past the million mark for the first time on a Canadian census, a spike of 45 per cent from a decade earlier.

Statistics Canada, which released new data Tuesday from the 2006 census on Canada's aboriginal population, counted 1,172,790 Indian, Métis and Inuit people — 3.8 per cent of Canada's total population.

This was an increase from 3.3 per cent in 2001 and 2.8 per cent in 1996, with the aboriginal population growing six times faster than the non-aboriginal population. Fewer than 800,000 people called themselves aboriginal in the 1996 census.

First Nations people accounted for the majority of aboriginal people (60 per cent) followed by Métis (33 per cent) and Inuit (four per cent).

Rosemary Bender, of Statistics Canada, said part of the reason for the increase is that more people are identifying themselves as belonging to one of the three aboriginal groups.

"We do find that an increasing number are reporting to us that they do have an aboriginal background," Bender told CBC News.

In the past, many more First Nations, Métis or Inuit people would refuse to participate in the government's enumeration surveys.

Another reason for the increase is the higher birth rates among aboriginal people compared to the non-aboriginal population, according to Statistics Canada.

About 1.7 million Canadians reported having at least some aboriginal ancestry. Statistics Canada defines "aboriginal ancestry" as the ethnic or cultural origin of a person's ancestors, usually more distant than a grandparent.

The census also found that more than half the country's 1.2 million aboriginal people are living off reserve. More than half of those who identify as aboriginal — 54 per cent — now call urban areas home, up from 50 per cent in 1996.

In comparison, 81 per cent of non-aboriginal people were urban dwellers in 2006.

The census also found an improvement in housing conditions with an overall decline in overcrowding. In 2006, 11 per cent of aboriginal people lived in homes with more than one person per room, down from 17 per cent in 1996.

But aboriginal people were almost four times as likely as non-aboriginal people to live in a crowded dwelling and were three times as likely to live in a dwelling in need of major repairs.

In terms of living arrangements, the census found that for aboriginal children under the age of 14, over half are living in a family with two parents. One-third are living with a lone parent — twice the rate for the non-aboriginal population.

Seven per cent are living with a grandparent or another relative, compared to one per cent in the non-aboriginal population.

Among other highlights:

The reported Métis population — those of mixed Indian and European ancestry — has almost doubled since the 1996 census.
Fifty-one per cent of the status Indian population lives off reserve, up from 50 per cent in 1996.
Eight in every 10 aboriginal people lived either in Ontario or in the four western provinces in 2006.
The aboriginal population in Canada is much younger than the non-aboriginal population, with a median age of 27 compared to 40. Almost half (48 per cent) of the aboriginal population is under the age of 25.[/B]"

If Canadienne are so blood thirsty and racist, then why do thousands of immigrants by the boats come to our country RUSTY answer that. Also i dont support our Conservative foreign policies but even if they did kick out the iranian diplomats, thats a foreign policy issue and has nothing to do with racism.

if you white invaders collectively killed yourselves, i assure you that the natives could live on without your "tax money" and without bearing the label of being ungrateful to the white pigs who slaughtered them and robbed them of their land.

and don't use your quarter pakistani blood to claim impartiality or to deflect criticism. i have plenty of choice words for quarter, half, three-quarter, and full-blooded chinese who have betrayed the values carried in their blood and will have no problem throwing them at a quarter pakistani.

what makes you white pigs think that canada belonged to white anglosaxons or francophone "canadienne" at all? asians come to canada for the same reason the white pigs went there: it is a vast country that can sustain a big population. the difference is that asians didn't arrive armed with rifles and machetes to massacre those who took up residence before them. that permanently seals the moral superiority of the asians over the white racists and murderers - too bad some of the asians got their blood diluted by promiscuous mating habits and thus squandered the moral force implied by their blood and subsequently forced their children and grandchildren to join the racist rank to hide their guilt and criminality.

Tell me this is another joke of the day from Press TV?

Please post credible non-Iranian/Indian source for such news.

Did i say canada belongs to white anglophones or quebecois, we have been an open society since Trudeau's era and very much brought up in multicultural environment. By the way you have no right to call me a white pig seriously your so racist and ignorant monsieur iajj, if i did not mention earlier i will do it again i am 25% pakistani not that it matters that makes me mix not 100% french quebecois. As far as the topic goes, I agree we have made many mistakes in the past including discrimination against(though nothing the likes of concentration camp as mentioned above) browns, asian and even with quebecois till the late 60s so i can understand the concern , but we have changed as a nation since Trudeau's era and are trying to make amends. the question is how long do we seriously have to make amends, it was not my generation that did it then why do we have to take pay the bills for something that happened long ago. my point is that Aboriginals now adays have it easy and dont want to try, i mean there is so much the government can do but there has to be will for there to be a way as the anglophone saying goes. the current crop of canadienne immigrant from asia, africa, europe are very hardworking and inspirational in the sense that even though we do not accept their native education/accomplishments, yet they choose integrate into your society and work hard to achieve the canadienne dream like my grandpapa.

"by the way you comment about blood diluting is very racist and has offended me since i have asian friends. sure there are no pure asians in my area but that does not mean they are any less asian than someone that is 100%. They are proud to be asians and more proud then you probably are, most of them can speak the cantonese dialect and some can even write in their respective language due to optional after school language classes provided by government to preserve our culture. hopefully this gets in your head , no adays you dont have to be 100% of something genetically to be of that culture.

il faut que je parte

bonne chance hopefully you find enlightment
