Ukraine mulling acquirement of US anti-missile defence system | Zee News
Last Updated: Wednesday, May 20, 2015 - 18:49

Kiev: Kiev may be looking to hold consultations about adopting an anti-missile defence system from the US, Alexander Turchinov, secretary of Ukraine`s National Security and Defence Council, told Ukrinform news agency in an interview released on Wednesday.

Turchinov denounced Russia for deploying more weapons of attack in Crimea, as Russia is actively working on the deployment of nuclear weapons and carriers on the peninsula that acceded to Moscow.

He noted that such actions by Russia raise concerns in Ukraine, as nuclear weapons in Crimea would mainly target European countries.

The defence secretary stressed that Russia`s threats to peace require measured reaction and active steps by the international community.

Turchinov said he believed that further sanctions should be placed against Russia for blocking the passage of warships through the Bosphorus, in addition to disconnecting Russia from the Society for the Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT).

Missile defense systems may be placed in Ukraine, Turchynov says| Ukrinform

KYIV, May 20 /Ukrinform/. Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov does not exclude the possibility of placement of ballistic missile defense systems on Ukraine's territory.

He said this in an interview with Ukrinform.

"I do not rule out that we will have to hold consultations on placing components of missile defense system on the territory of Ukraine for protection against nuclear danger," Turchynov said.

He noted that Ukraine's efforts to counter an aggressor who threatens the world with powerful nuclear arsenal were not enough.

"Our country's efforts are not enough to really confront the madman who threatens the world with powerful nuclear potential. We need cooperation and systematic coordination of efforts of all the leading countries of the world. It should be a package of economic, political and military measures. It also includes a significant strengthening of the joint nuclear threat protection systems and placement of additional missile defense systems," he said.

Ukraine open to hosting missile-defense system

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine is open to considering proposals to place a ballistic missile-defense system on its territory to ward off the risk of attacks from Russia, a senior Ukrainian defense official said Wednesday. So far no one has offered.

Oleksandr Turchynov, the head of Ukraine's National Security Council, told Ukrinform news agency in an interview that Russia has become an increased threat since annexing the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea and increasing its military presence there.

Russian news agencies cited Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying Wednesday that the deployment of a missile-defense system in Ukraine would force Russia to adopt countermeasures.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said "There's no offer or plan to place U.S. or NATO ballistic missile defense systems in Ukraine. I don't think we're exactly sure what they're referring to."

Ukraine has repeatedly raised alarms about what it sees as Russia's aggressive military posture. It says Moscow has actively supplied separatists in east Ukraine with arms and manpower and that it routinely bolsters offensive capabilities in western Russia.

President Petro Poroshenko's government is concerned that Russia is making concerted efforts to move its nuclear capabilities to Crimea, which was absorbed by Moscow in 2014 following a referendum almost universally rejected by the international community.

"That the annexation of Crimea has significantly increased Russia's military capabilities and changed its balance of military power in the Black Sea and Mediterranean is understood by all our partners," Turchynov said. "But nobody goes beyond issuing statements and expressing deep concern."

"Ten Iskander-M tactical missile systems have already been delivered to the peninsula near the village of Shcholkine and Krasnoperekopsk," Turchynov told Ukrinform.

Russian Defense Ministry officials have also said they will deploy long-range, nuclear-capable Tu-22M3 bombers to Crimea.

Turchynov suggested that the West should consider improving its own security by barring Russian warships from passing through the Bosporus Strait — the narrow stretch that divides Turkey's European and Asian parts and links the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.

NATO's U.S.-led missile-defense plans envisage deploying elements of the missile shield around Europe for what it says would be defense against Iran. Moscow sees this as a threat to its nuclear deterrent.

Unrest in eastern Ukraine has diminished markedly since a cease-fire was agreed between the government and Russian-backed separatist forces in February, but skirmishes continue daily. Military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said Wednesday that three government troops had been killed in action over the previous day.

Poroshenko said at a press conference in Kiev with Slovakian counterpart Andrej Kiska that Russia has between 4,000 and 14,000 soldiers stationed in Ukraine at any given time.

"This is not just Ukrainian information. This is intelligence from NATO countries and other sources," Poroshenko said.

Ukrainian authorities this week showed off two men they say are Russian soldiers who were captured while on active duty in the rebellious east.

In video statements posted by the Ukrainian Security Service, the men say they were taking part in a reconnaissance operation in the Luhansk region Saturday when they were fired on, wounded and captured. Both say they were members of an army brigade based in the Russian city of Togliatti and had been deployed in Ukraine for more than a month.

Rubbish.NATO's U.S.-led missile-defense is for "protection" of NATO members.Ukraine is neither member nor has a chance ever to become one. There will be no anti-missile defense for Ukraine ever as stated by officials after Turchinov came out with the idea.
And as for rest of OP claims-as always absolutely no proof apart from cheap talk.Talk none believing neither in the West nor in the East.

EU Commissioner: Ukraine to get visa-free regime with EU after criteria fulfillment| Ukrinform
KYIV, May 22 /Ukrinform/. Ukraine and Georgia may get a visa-free regime with the European Union in the near future after the fulfillment of certain criteria.

EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn said this at the Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga on Friday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

"The draft declaration says that if Ukraine and Georgia fulfill important requirements, the visa-free regime with the EU is possible in the near future," the commissioner said.

He added that the main prerequisite for Ukraine and Georgia to receive the visa-free regime included positive findings in the European Commission report, which would be made public by the end of 2015.
