UK MoD holds firm on Future Force 2020 contracts
UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) will not postpone military contracts beyond 2020 in order to meet the budget challenges of the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR), the defence secretary has told a parliamentary committee.
Philip Hammond, who took up his role in October following the resignation of Liam Fox, said he was committed to delivering the capabilities of Future Force 2020 - the government's framework for military capability required by 2020 - on target before the end of the decade.
Giving evidence before the House of Commons Defence Select Committee on 7 December, Hammond was asked whether he could give a commitment that the MoD would not postpone contracts beyond 2020 even though it would be easier to "achieve its obligations" by delaying expenditure. According to the Royal United Services Institute, the MoD is facing back-loaded cuts of nearly 7.5 per cent by 2015 under the 2010 SDSR.
Hammond said: "The outcome commitment is to have the ability to deliver the capabilities that Future Force 2020 envisages by 2020. That is the challenge that we face."
