UK economy ‘very worrying’: France

PARIS: France fuelled a cross-Channel row on Friday, describing Britain’s economy as “very worrying” as the press in London reacted with fury to French calls for British debt to be downgraded.

The row comes after Britain clashed with France at an EU summit and refused to join members of the eurozone currency bloc in a new fiscal pact, prompting French President Nicolas Sarkozy to declare there are now “two Europes”.

Despite widespread condemnation in London of criticism from Paris on Thursday, Finance Minister Francois Baroin picked up the issue again, saying the French economy was in better shape than the British one.

“It’s true that the economic situation in Great Britain is very worrying and that we prefer being French rather than British on the economic front at the moment,” Baroin said on Europe 1 radio.

“We don’t want to be given any lessons and we don’t give any,” he said.

Baroin’s comments came as the British press on Friday slammed French officials for suggesting that ratings agencies were
targeting the wrong country for a debt downgrade by looking at France.

“They should start by downgrading the United Kingdom, which has greater deficits, as much debt, more inflation and less growth than us,” central bank chief Christian Noyer had told regional newspaper Le Telegramme.

French Prime Minister Francois Fillon picked up on the theme on Thursday, telling reporters in Sao Paolo that ratings agencies seemed to be ignoring the state of British government finances.

“We are challenged on the European currency, first of all because we are too indebted,” he said.

“But we are not the only ones. Our British friends are even more indebted than we are and have a higher deficit, but the ratings agencies do not seem to notice this.”

UK economy

LOL.

useless western countries.

every single one of these big western countries are bankrupt except germany.
US, UK, france, italy, spain are finished.
its just a matter of time before the UK and US faces the pressure from the market on their debt load.
then they either accept much higher interest payments, default or inflate away their debts.

I wonder what they did with their economy.... they looted almost every country in the world & even then today they are going to be bankrupt...:what:

Sahi kaha hai bujurgon ne chori ka dhan kabhi falta nahi hai..... sale angrej.. :flame:

Now its crack down on immigration to save the economy from foreigners lol. People in the UK are now staring at job losses, pay cuts and the possibility of home repossession , just to name a few problems that are being caused by the UK economy. This is all made worse by the very fact that the cost of living is getting much higher in the UK. Household utility bills such as water, gas and electric have all seen very sharp increases over recent months making it much harder for people to afford to pay off loans, mortgages

Overdone welfare and high taxes will inevitably ruin the Europe!Their governments have realized this but handicapped by democratic mechanism in any correct measures.Europeans are accustomed to live a decent live by welfare and relief rather than working hard.

once one power sinks, another will rise. this is how it works, besides the west is finally paying for its crimes in the past. they never got justice for their colonialism, oppression, slavery and the wars they started. in fact these are the reason the west is so developed today.

UK is in a unique position. america has been getting away with quantitive easing because it is the reserve currency. I am concerned for sterling cos uk has been printing money and there is precedence that this leads eventualy to currency being worthless

...not to mention the Manufacturing base that Miss Thatcher destroyed....UK has financial services left, rising unemployment and above all huge urban decay. If you venture in any of the lesser suburbs, you'll know what i mean.

I mean, you can't find a part time job in big cities...let alone a full time one.

I think the French are a bit jealous in that they are right at the heart of the EU and the Eurozone whereas the UK never fully committed.
Cuts have been made, things will get better. The country has had enough of benefit scroungers and lowlifes who don't work. The anger against the recent riots showed that.
