Patiala, November 1

Following Military intelligence inputs, the Patiala police on Thursday claimed to have busted a terror module with the arrested. The police linked the module with the UK-based saying that its plan was to target a police station or a market during the ongoing festive season.

The youth was in touch with former secretary general of the PSGPC a top police officer said.

“Arrested was planning to attack police stations/posts and crowded places. A pistol, a hand grenade, a motorcycle and letter pads belonging to some banned terror outfits have been recovered from him,” confirmed Patiala SSP.

“The arrest has exposed the nexus between International spy agency and fringe UK Based outfit. It proves once again that the fringe UK Based outfit continues to spearhead and promote the campaign through violence and arson,” said state DGP adding that “the fringe UK Based outfit is preying on poor, illiterate and devout youths from countryside and radicalising them.”

State DGP said the UK based arrested village, county has been identified and was currently out on bail in a case registered in United Kingdom. “He was operating a Facebook account under the name of ‘Lahoria Jatt Gill’ with a profile picture of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. In July 2018, he was contacted by British intelligence officer and introduced to British citizen and was further introduced to another British citizen and another person, who told him that they were UK based outfit. They asked UK based arrested to promote propaganda against Republic of India,” the DGP claimed.

“UK based arrested and his aides set vends and shacks afire last month and sent videos. UK based arrested purchased a motorcycle and a mobile phone, after which 50,000 British Currency was transferred to him by Nihal,” the police said.

“Recently, British intelligence officer asked UK based arrested to issue press statements under the name of ‘Khalistan Gadar Force’ and claim responsibility for arson and other terror acts committed by them,” the police added. “UK based arrested was assured of 1 million foreign currency for each terror act. On October 24, a pistol and a grenade were delivered to UK based arrested and UK based arrested was asked to hurl the grenade at a police station or in a crowded place during the festive season,” said Patiala SSP .

A police team headed by DSP and CIA incharge cracked the case on the basis of inputs. “UK based arrested initial grilling has revealed that UK based arrested was planning to strike a couple of days before Diwali,” the Patiala SSP said.

Bid to revive insurgency in Punjab through ‘external linkages’: Army chief Bipin Rawat

Attempts are being made through “external linkages” to “revive insurgency” in Punjab and if early action is not taken, it will be too late, Army Chief Gen. Bipin Rawat Saturday said.

Attempts are being made through “external linkages” to “revive insurgency” in Punjab and if early action is not taken, it will be too late, Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat Saturday said.

Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat was addressing a gathering of senior Army officers, defence experts and former senior officials of government and police at a seminar here on ‘Changing Contours of Internal Security in India: Trends and Responses’.

Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat also said that attempts were being made again through “external linkages” and “external abetment” to revive insurgency in Assam.

“Punjab has been peaceful but because of these external linkages, attempts again are being made to revive insurgency in the state,” Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said, adding, “we have to be very careful.” “Let us not think that Punjab (situation) is over. We cannot close our eyes to what is happening in Punjab. And, if we do not take early action now, it will be too late,” Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said.

Punjab saw one of the worst phases of insurgencies in the 1980s during the pro-Khalistan movement which was eventually quelled by the Indian Armed Forces.

Former Uttar Pradesh DGP in a panel discussion also highlighted the issue and said “attempts were being to revive insurgency” in Punjab.

Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat referred to a pro-Khalistan rally organised recently in the UK aiming for a ‘Referendum 2020’.

Hundreds of people had turned out at Trafalgar Square in London on August 12 in support of a pro-Khalistan rally as well as to counter the event with an Independence Day celebrations. Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) had said its rally was intended to raise awareness for a non-binding referendum in 2020, calling for Punjab to be granted independence.

The “We Stand With India” and “Love My India” events were organised by Indian diaspora groups as a reaction to the pro-Khalistan “London Declaration for a Referendum 2020”.

Internal security is one of the biggest problems in the country, but question is “why we have not been able to find a solution, because it has external linkages,” Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said.

The event was organised by defence think-tank CLAWS (Centre for Land and Warfare Studies). Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat is its patron.

Asserting that insurgency cannot be dealt with military force, he pitched for adopting an approach in which all agencies, the government, civil administration, military and police work in an “integrated manner”.

“The resolution of Naga insurgency can be forerunner to the Manipur insurgency situation. There are some linkages between the two. But, if that resolution does not satisfy Manipuris then the insurgency in that state will take a different turn, Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said.

As far as Assam is concerned, attempts are again being made, through “external linkages” to revive insurgency in the state, Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said.

And, also through external abetment, and acknowledged once even by the “northern neighbour”. So, there is no denying the fact that there are these factors, Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat added.
