The United Arab Emirates said on Wednesday that it had "welcomed President Ashraf Ghani and his family into the country on humanitarian grounds".
It remained unclear whether Ghani flew directly to the UAE or was at another location since he left Kabul on Sunday, just as the Taliban approached Kabul.
The statement carried by the UAE's state-run WAM news agency on Wednesday did not say where Ghani was in the country.
It quoted the country's Foreign Ministry in a one-sentence statement.
At the time of fleeing the country on Sunday, Ghani had said he was leaving to “prevent a flood of bloodshed”, as the Taliban entered the capital, capping a lightning offensive across the country.
Ghani had said he believed “countless patriots would be martyred and the city of Kabul would be destroyed” if he had stayed behind.
“The Taliban have won [...] and are now responsible for the honour, property and self-preservation of their countrymen,” he said in a statement posted to Facebook.
“They are now facing a new historical test. Either they will preserve the name and honour of Afghanistan or they will give priority to other places and networks,” he had added.
Initially he did not say where he had travelled to, but leading Afghan media group Tolo News suggested he had gone to Tajikistan.
'Fled with bags full of cash'
Meanwhile, the Russian embassy in Kabul had on Monday said that Ghani fled the country with four cars and a helicopter full of cash and had to leave some money behind as it would not all fit in.
“As for the collapse of the (outgoing) regime, it is most eloquently characterised by the way Ghani fled Afghanistan,” Nikita Ishchenko, a spokesman for the Russian embassy in Kabul, was quoted as saying by RIA news agency.
“Four cars were full of money, they tried to stuff another part of the money into a helicopter, but not all of it fit. And some of the money was left lying on the tarmac,” he was quoted as saying.
The Taliban had declared the war in Afghanistan over on August 16 after taking control of the presidential palace in Kabul.
“Today is a great day for the Afghan people and the mujahideen. They have witnessed the fruits of their efforts and their sacrifices for 20 years,” Mohammad Naeem, the spokesman for the Taliban's political office, had told Al Jazeera TV.

Ashraf Ghani will live like a king in UAE. He and Mohib will have a whale of a time spending the loot.
I just hope that a true Afghan or American will get to him first.

If you have money, then why not. I think Afghan leaders have already invested in UAE properties and businesses.
Obviously, the Afghan army didn't get paid for 2 months of salary and govt employees were facing the same fate. Money was flowing out to somewhere and must be a massive amount.

UAE was unhappy when Qatar was hosting Afghan peace talks. Now, this asylum may cause some problems in the future for the present Afghan govt.

Not really Ashraf Ghani is loathed by Afghans of all stripes today.
He is toast as far Afghan politics are concerned, but on the other hand he and Mohib has plane loads of USDs and the UAE will quite welcome him spending his ill-gotten wealth there.

Has Karzai been assigned anything?
Meeting some one and that person being part of a government are two different things.

KABUL, Aug 18 (Reuters) - A Taliban commander and senior leader of the Haqqani Network militant group, Anas Haqqani, has met former Afghan President Hamid Karzai for talks, a Taliban official said on Wednesday, amid efforts by the Taliban to set up a government.
Karzai was accompanied by the old government's main peace envoy, Abdullah Abdullah, in the meeting, said the Taliban official, who declined to be identified. He gave no more details.
The Haqqani Network is an important faction of the Taliban, who captured the capital, Kabul, on Sunday. The network, based on the border with Pakistan, was accused over recent years of some of the most deadly militant attacks in Afghanistan.

Karzai is positioning himself as a statesman, and his meeting Anas Haqqani probably means that he is trying to mend his ties with Pakistan.
Let's see what happens in the future.

Remember Rtrd Gen Shoaib said, Haqqani group lives in UAE not in Pakistan. Their businesses and family in UAE. Non Haqqani group in Pakistan. Pakistan has only good ties with the Taliban, the rest all are a damaging factor for Pakistan.

. .
If any of u remember, at start of PTI govt and taliban US negotiations, the negotiations for once were held in Dubai UAE at request of UAE. After that one meeting, the taliban refused to meet at any location other than doha.
Well for those who can see through the shades, it must be more evident now.
