UAE signs uranium deals worth Dh11 billion
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) has announced today the six companies contracted to provide the fuel supply for the UAE's nuclear power programme.
The contracts, valued US$3 billion (Dh11bn), have been awarded to Canadian Uranium One, Inc and British Rio Tinto which will provide natural uranium.
American ConverDyn will provide conversion services while British firm Urenco will provide enrichment services.
Uranium concentrates supply, conversion services and enrichment services will be provided by Russian Tenex and French firm Areva, according to a statement from Enec.
The bids for the contracts were launched by Enec in July last year, spurring the signing of a number of international nuclear fuel supply agreements by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, most recently with Canada and Australia.
The contracted fuel will enable the Braka nuclear plant to generate up to 450 million MWh for a period of 15 years starting in 2017, when the first nuclear energy unit is scheduled to begin providing safe, clean, reliable and efficient electricity to the UAE.
"The completion of the fuel supply strategy is a key achievement to Enec's programme and a clear example of how the UAE continues to set the gold standard for implementing a peaceful nuclear energy programme," said Enec's chief executive Mohamed Al Hammadi.
"These contracts will provide Enec with long-term security of supply, high-quality fuel and favourable pricing and commercial terms.
"We are also pleased that this marks the start of long-term commercial relationships with companies that have earned excellent reputations in the industry."
