More than 8 million Pakistani children have been vaccinated against polio as a result of the UAE’s Pakistan Assistance Programme.
The vaccinations took place over June, July and August, the state news agency Wam reported.
The initiative, which carried out the vaccines under the directives of the President, Sheikh Khalifa, falls in line with plans by the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, to eradicate polio worldwide.
Helping more than 3 million children in June, more than 2 million in July, and almost 3 million in August, the campaign exceeded its target, Wam reported.
Among the more than 25 areas targeted were Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and other tribal districts.
More than 200 cases have been discovered in Pakistan this year.

More than 8 million Pakistani children have been vaccinated against polio as a result of the UAE’s Pakistan Assistance Programme.

Gates praises UAE efforts to eradicate polio
The UAE has immunised millions of Pakistani children with more than 28.8 million polio vaccines in January and February this year
Bill Gates, founder and co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation hailed in an article published in a number of Arab and international newspapers, the efforts of the UAE and His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces to eradicate polio.
Gates pointed to the generous donations made by the UAE to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation in 2012, where it has allocated $33 million (Dh121 million) to immunise children in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He also praised the contribution made by the UAE, under the guidance of Shaikh Mohammad, for the generous donations to eradicate polio in Pakistan and other countries of the world, and its tireless efforts to fight misconceptions that limit the success of immunisation campaigns, which have resulted in the success of UAE’s leadership efforts in northern Pakistan, thanks to the close ties between the peoples of these two countries.
In his article entitled “Gulf Countries at the forefront in improving the lives of poor people”, Gates touched on their future vision for the lives of people in poor countries, which is expected to improve at an accelerated and unprecedented pace in the next 15 years in the field of health care, the low mortality rate among children and the elimination of more infectious diseases.
The UAE has also immunised millions of Pakistani children with more than 28.8 million polio vaccines in January and February 2015 as part of the second phase of the Emirates Polio Campaign launched under the directives of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan on an initiative by Shaikh Mohammad.
The effort is part of the UAE government’s 2013 pledge of Dh440 million to support global efforts to eradicate polio by 2018, said the UAE Pakistan Assistance Programme (UAE-PAP) in its announcement of the results of polio immunisation drive for the first two months of the current year.
A total of 13,826,386 polio vaccine doses were given to Pakistani children aged under five years in January in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Sindh and the tribal provinces. In February, children in these regions were given 14,977,824 additional doses of the vaccine in February, said the administration of the UAE-PAP.
A third does of the polio vaccine will be given in March to the children in the targeted Pakistani regions as part of massive immunisation drive being carried in cooperation with the Pakistan army, ministry of health and regional governments and World Health Organisation (WHO).
The UAE-PAP polio campaign used more than 10,000 teams using health care centres and mobile units for remote villages, refugee camps and border areas.

UAE provides 86.6m polio vaccines in Pakistan
More than 20m children vaccinated under Emirates Polio Campaign till May this year
The UAE has immunised more than 20 million Pakistani children against polio with nearly 87 million vaccines administered as part of the Emirates Polio Campaign till May this year.
The campaign was launched under the directives of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan on an initiative by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces.
The UAE was declared a polio-free country in 1993.
Speaking at Shaikh Mohammad’s Ramadan majlis in the capital on Monday, Abdullah Khalifa Al Gafli, head of the UAE Pakistan Assistance Programme (UAE-PAP), said that 86.6 million polio vaccine doses were administered to more than 20.6 million Pakistani children aged under five.
“Polio cases in Pakistan have declined 71 per cent from 82 in the corresponding period last year to 24 cases this year,” he said.
Al Gafli added the polio campaign under the slogan ‘A Healthy and Bright Future for All’ is reaching children in areas that were previously inaccessible to vaccinators. The campaign is also working with community leaders to improve confidence in the vaccination programme, he said.
The UAE-PAP programme used 123,487 teams, 3,205 doctors, 12,765 supervisors and 21,116 security men, using health-care centres and mobile units for remote villages, refugee camps and border areas, covering 49 per cent of Pakistan’s area and achieving 98.7 per cent success.
Al Gafli added that the UAE has also implemented 163 development projects at a cost of $340 million.
Dr Elias Durry, emergency coordinator for polio eradication at the World Health Organisation, thanked the UAE for its continued support.
“We have never been closer to wiping polio off the face of the Earth,” he said. “Africa has seen strong progress. With no wild poliovirus cases reported since August 2014, the continent is on the cusp of becoming polio-free. Pakistan remains the single largest risk to the eradication effort. In 2014, more than 85 per cent of global cases were reported in Pakistan and the majority of Afghanistan’s cases were tied to Pakistan. Both countries must succeed together to achieve sustained cessation of polio.”
Commitment
Durry called on governments of polio-affected countries to redouble their efforts to reach children, especially in insecure areas, with the polio vaccine and the international community to follow through on its financial and political commitments.
A portion of a documentary titled ‘Every Last Child’, produced by Abu Dhabi-based film production company Image Nation, was screened at the majlis.
Directed by the award-winning documentary film director Tom Roberts, Every Last Child is the dramatic story of five people caught in the polio crisis in Pakistan.
It brings together a set of powerful characters — medical specialist, vaccinator, cynic, adult polio victim and sick child. A story vivid in detail, intense with feeling, is the backdrop to a desperate search for a solution to this devastating disease.
Roberts congratulated the UAE for its “remarkable” efforts in Pakistan to eradicate polio.
“The film reflects the huge effort the people are making to eradicate polio. It is the story of the sweat and tears of the people fighting all resistance to make the vaccination campaign successful,” Roberts said.

The UAE has immunised more than 20.6 million Pakistani children against polio with nearly 87 million vaccines administered as part of the Emirates Polio Campaign till May this year, said Abdullah Khalifa Al Gafli, Director of UAE Pakistan Assistance Programme (UAE-PAP) .
The polio campaign was launched in Pakistan under the directives of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan on an initiative by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces to eradicate polio in Pakistan.
The campaign comes as a translation of Shaikh Khalifa’s instructions to step up health-care programmes in the affected areas of Pakistan and is part of a Dh440 million pledge by Shaikh Mohammad to support global efforts in eradicating polio by 2018, with a specific contribution towards Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Al Ghafli said that the UAE’s polio campaign in Pakistan has been very successful. The campaign, he said, was aimed to provide humanitarian an development aid, support health sector and its preventive programmes.
Al Gafli added the polio campaign under the slogan, ‘A Healthy and Bright Future for All’, is reaching children in areas that were previously inaccessible to vaccinators. The campaign is also working with community leaders to improve confidence in the vaccination programme

Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq, who is heading the campaign and focal person for polio eradication in Pakistan, said that there has been a major turnaround in the polio situation in Pakistan as the armed forces have helped us reclaim areas that were earlier inaccessible.
“The UAE has played a major role in funding these operations and as a consequence of this and through a heightened level of political commitment we have successfully tackled polio,” she added.
With improved monitoring and coordination, she said, there has been a sharp rise in campaign coverage and a dip in the number of reported cases.
“Thanks to the concerted efforts and through the help of the UAE, all agencies of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) are now accessible to health workers and polio vaccination is in full swing.
“Most of the restive and security compromised areas of the country have been successfully targeted through special protected polio campaigns with innovative strategies including reducing the campaign to one day and by cordoning off areas to provide a safe environment for vaccinators,” she concluded.
The campaign was launched after thee World Health Organisation (WHO) reports had indicated the seriousness of the increase in the number of cases detected in Pakistan in 2014, where 303 child were affected by polio. It was the highest number of cases of the disease in a decade, as the total number of cases recorded at the global level reached 339 cases, where about 90 per cent of children who fell victim to polio through 2014 are Pakistani children.
