UAE Offers Mirage Fighters to Iraq

ABU DHABI — The United Arab Emirates may be offloading up to 10 Mirage 2000-9s to the Iraqi Air Force in March, according to a UAE government source.

The decision comes after the Dec. 15 visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to Abu Dhabi to "discuss mechanisms to enhance cooperation between the two countries and dry up the sources of terrorism."

---

What's the point of buying only 10 Mirages, if you get small numbers of many different aircraft you get a big pricetag on logistical/spare parts and other stuff. UAE has 68 Mirage 2000 aircraft.

obviously desperate and need of planes.

they really need more SU-25 and maybe Iraq can look into buying some Tornados off of the UK and Germany.

This is no move led by desperation & needing operational aircraft quickly, it will take years training the pilots for Mirage-2000 and other new platforms. SU-25's were operational quickly as veteran pilots have experience with the aircraft have flown them during the time of Saddam, that's not the case with Mirage 2000. Anyway the Mirage 2000-9 is a good aircraft, it might be that they offer small batches as they sold Egypt a small batch as well.

More modern Su-39's should be bought

10 used and abused mirages won't cut it for Iraqi Air Force unless you buy the whole fleet. The units they will sell were the ones originally bought and have been put through enormous flight stresses during training phases.

.
wrong decision on part of Iraq. look for something like used F-16s from USA, they will sell few.

.
It's only an offer. If it's only for the 10 most used aircraft because they want to get rid of em they shouldn't buy them, UAE also is looking to upgrade it's Mirage-2000's so they won't sell all 68, I don't think they will buy any Mirage.

. .
Why does Iraq not buy more F-16's? 36 have been ordered and they will arrive by the end of 2015 but gradually if I am not wrong.

Also when can we expect the Iraqi Air Force to take a step further and buy a 4.5 generation jet fighter? I imagine at least after 2020.

The thing though is that Iraq is not a poor country due to the wealth of natural resources and the government has quite a big military budget that will probably increase for each year as Iraq tries to establish itself in the region again and restore order at home.

I expect more F-16 orders to follow or at least other American aircraft. The possibility of Russian fighter jets has become small due to the US-Russia tensions and the US being 'back in Iraq'. Except the whole subject of purchasing and using fighter jets are not for the ISIS chapter cause it'll take years to have operational aircraft other than the current F-16's in Arizona which are not being delivered yet.

What about maintenance work along the way? Will that be done in Iraq or will the US provide logistic support at all times? Also how many Iraqi pilots are conducting training in the US and for how long? You have an idea? If all of those 36 F-16's are due to arrive before the end of 2015 then they will be back before this happens? Or will more pilots be trained in the US along the way as the orders rise and thus need for more pilots?

They are being offered to Iraq free of charge, like the 300 vehicles Kuwait supplied to Iraq free of charge. Yet people here keep saying "Junk", they are the most advanced Mirages in the world, better than the ones the french are flying even. Or is it dirty Gulf Arab stuff, yuck.

.
For a country that is well off, it need not need to get old jets. they should get some f16s

.
All talk I think the planes are free of charge and I think they will come with their pilots other wise we have no pilots for them actually we have none except few of them still in the US and those being traind for the F-16.

I don't thing the Emarites will send us 10 M2k-9 without pilots because they will be in hangar for the next 3-4 years I don't think so.

What do you think of the GCC reproachment to Iraq recently?
