UAE denies visa to Israeli tennis player

No surprise here Israeli are not allowed entry into the UAE, this is a long established policy of the UAE government. If I am not mistaken they do not allow anyone with an Israeli stamp on their passport to enter their country.

The United ARAB Emirates have every right to protect their people from these war criminals just like the US and the west have the right to protecct them from terrorist.
I would like to add that this form of banning is far from being extremly voilent as compared to Isreal treatment to the Arab people aswel as the US.

Stupid Decision - It brings honor to whom? A state acting against a girl, a athlete?
A legal decision. UAE does not have diplomatic ties with the Israel. How they can issue a visa to the citizen of a country they dont recognize?

India is no model to emulate. And UAE have no beef with Israeli atheletes, in the end, she a athelete and a girl and a human being before she's Israeli, anyway, in which ever order one prefers, how will this influence the lunes who unleash tanks in Gaza??

She's not just an "Athlete". She's' an "Israeli" athlete, representing and playing for the state of Israel. if UAE has no diplomatic relations with Israel, then why on earth would they want someone from Israel to play in their country? Makes perfect sense. Good decision.

The issue of not allowing players who represent the occupying apartheid state to play sports in our countries is about honour, dignity, justice, and most importantly, SELF-RESPECT. The issue was *never* about fairness to begin with...

Unfortunately some pakistanis dont comprehend what self-respect and honour entails...

My question to these people is: Are citizens of UAE or Pakistan allowed in Isreal? Are they even allowed to visit the historic or religious places in the occupied territories?

No that's just a rumor, the bit about the Israeli stamp. Thats right up there with "Jews are not allowed to enter"... Israelis are not allowed thats true.

There were legal ways to get her in, since exceptions HAVE been made. But as I said this is just something that Sheikh Mohammad couldn't afford not to do after all the fuss that is being created against Israel these days, there are like huge advert campaigns to save and rebuild Gaza. This is just his way of saying that when push comes to shove he will stick it up to the bad guys.

There are some people here who come here and claim to be pakistanis

Then UAE have no right to conduct an international tournament..!! Israel have not been banned by the UN then how can UAE volountarliy ban the sports person..!!! And i think the athelete was not responsible for the Killings of the innocent civilians in Gaza...!!! This is an immature decision by UAE..!!!

Point taken
Israel and UAE do not have diplomatic relationships therefore this visa denial makes sense.
UAE has every right to deny any foreign national to its shores whatever the reason. In contrast, neighbour, Qatar is actively wooing Israeli interests. The lady in question has actually played in Qatar open

Dubai event fined record $300,000 for Peer ban
The Dubai Championships was fined a record $300,000 by the governing body of women's tennis (WTA) on Friday after top Israeli player Shahar PIsrael's Shahar Peer during her match at the Qatar Open WTA tournament on February 20, 2008. (AFP Photo)
eer was barred from taking part in this week's event.

The WTA said in a statement the fine was the largest levied against a WTA Tour member and Peer would be awarded $44,250 -- the average prize money she earned per tournament in 2008.

"The actions taken today are intended to redress the wrongs suffered by Shahar Peer, who was victimised by an unjust policy of discrimination by the UAE," said WTA chief Larry Scott.

"These actions are also intended to send a clear message that our Tour will not tolerate discrimination of any kind and that we will never allow this situation to happen again in the UAE or elsewhere," he added in a statement.

Peer had to forfeit her place in the lucrative $2 million tournament after the United Arab Emirates, which has no diplomatic ties with Israel, denied her entry into the country.

However, after receiving global condemnation for excluding Peer, the UAE was forced on Thursday to change its policy of barring Israeli athletes from competing in the Gulf state.

The UAE, like most Arab countries, has no diplomatic ties with Israel and routinely denies entry to its citizens.

Tensions have been heightened after the three-week Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip, which killed 1,300 Palestinians and 14 Israelis. Although the conflict ended in January it caused deep anger around the Arab and Muslim worlds.

The WTA was determined to hand out stiff sanctions to the Dubai tournament despite being assured all Israeli athletes would now be given "a special permit" by the UAE government to enter the country if they have qualified for a tournament.

"The fact they fixed their policy going forward doesn't make it okay what happened last week," Scott said on Thursday.

Peer's doubles partner, Germany's Anna Lena Groenefeld was awarded $7,950 because she could not compete in Dubai as a result of the Israeli's exclusion.

The WTA said the compensation being paid to Peer and Groenefeld would come from the fine levied against the tournament with the balance "donated to a charity or charities, to be determined by the Tour in consultation with Ms Peer".

Peer would be allocated 130 ranking points, which the WTA said was equal to total she earned during the same week in 2008.

For the Dubai Championships to be included in the 2010 calendar, the WTA wants the tournament to post a $2 million financial performance guarantee by July 1 and it also set down further conditions.

The Tour wants written confirmation that all players who qualify for the tournament will be allowed to compete in Dubai and that Israeli players should receive proof of an entry permit at least eight weeks before the event.

The WTA also wants a guarantee Peer will be offered a wildcard to play in the 2010 Dubai tournament even if she fails to qualify by ranking.

Before the UAE changed its policy regarding Israeli athletes, pressure had been mounting for next week's ATP tournament to be cancelled in Dubai if Israeli doubles specialist Andy Ram had also been blocked from competing.

However, Ram was given "special permission" to compete on Thursday, ensuring the men's event will go ahead as planned.

Yes this is a true story, and you know what else the "Tennis Channel" has decided not to broadcast the Tennis games staged in Dubai...Probably a Zionist or Jewish CEO behind that decision I guarantee you!

Perhaps this Israeli girl ought to consider her ban from Dubai like a "checkpoint" designed to keep her away from her destination...

Brother this crap really PISSES ME OFF....I never saw any complaint from these dirt bags, when Gaza Soccer players were not allowed to leave Gaza for a tournament, because those Israeli scum bags wouldn't let them. This is completely BS.....If it's a freaking Israeli, the whole world has something to say, but if it is anyone else....they won't give a crap. Palestine will be FREE.....

Completely agree with you.
If it's a jew, it reaches the world headlines.
But when the Iraqi soccerteam or Gaza soccerteam in this instance is not allowed to travel or play it's matches due to Israel's ban then suddenly, it's not so interesting anymore.

Linking sports to events not under control is a complete BS and UAE was rightly fined but it would have been even better if the tournament was canceled.Sports link countries and help a lot in uniting People as it did in Indo-Pak case and denying visa to an international player is complete BS.UAE should be ashamed of the precedent it is setting.
