While there is no upside for us to engage with Venezuela and in buying for oil except for discounts, its not worth harming our relations with USA.
That said, we also need to toe the line on how much USA can influence our relations with other countries, USA is a global power and can be at the center of almost all conflicts, we can't let that influence our relations. It was good that our govt stood up against USA in dealing with Iran and Russia. But this needs to be conveyed to USA.

We are not in position to take on america.buying oil from iran was nessesary for us cause iran fits in our geopolitical calculus Venezuela is important for usa calculations.
We should backoff for now

India only complies with UN Resolutions. Not individual countries.

On a more realistic note, we should start building back-up options in case someone crazier than Trump comes to power in 2020.
