U.S. urged to support Taiwan's involvement in regional economy

Taipei, May 12 (CNA) The head of a prominent Washington think tank expressed support for Taiwan's involvement in the regional economy Monday, saying the United States should do more to facilitate that goal as part of a broader vision of global economic freedom.

Jim DeMint, president of the Heritage Foundation and a former U.S. senator from South Carolina, said that restrictions imposed "from outside" on Taiwan's international relations have limited its options for getting involved in regional economic affairs, and he believes it is time for the U.S. to lend a helping hand.

"The U.S. should take the lead in getting Taiwan into a truly liberalizing Transpacific Partnership,"
said DeMint, who gave a speech in Taiwan at the invitation of the Taipei-based Association of Foreign Relations.

At the very least, he said, there should be a bilateral Free Trade Agreement between Taiwan and the U.S.

In his prepared statements, titled "Conserving the Promise of Freedom in Asia," DeMint said that given the rising power of China, the U.S. should stand firm with its allies in the region.

Noting U.S. President Barack Obama's move to send a cabinet secretary to Taiwan -- a reference to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy -- DeMint said a similar partnership is what is in need to forge stronger ties.

McCarthy visited in mid-April, making her the first serving U.S. Cabinet-level official to travel to Taiwan in nearly 14 years.

In his remarks, DeMint also called for the U.S. to maintain its military advantage and build up defense capabilities to make available the arms Taiwan needs for its defense.

"If the U.S. is not strong, I am afraid that despite our shared values, our allies and partners will be much less willing to follow our leadership," he said.
