U.S. to Be World’s Top Oil Producer in 5 Years, Report Says

The United States will overtake Saudi Arabia as the world’s leading oil producer by about 2017 and will become a net oil exporter by 2030, according to a new report released on Monday by the International Energy Agency.

That increased oil production, combined with new American policies to improve energy efficiency, means that the United States will become “all but self-sufficient” in meeting its energy needs in about two decades — a “dramatic reversal of the trend” in most developed countries, the report says.

“The foundations of the global energy systems are shifting,” said Fatih Birol, chief economist at the Paris-based organization, which produces the annual World Energy Outlook, in an interview before the release. The agency, which advises industrialized nations on energy issues, had previously predicted that Saudi Arabia would be the leading producer until 2035.

The report also predicted that global energy demand would grow by 35 percent to 46 percent between 2010 and 2035, depending on whether policies that have been proposed are actually put in place. Most of that growth will come from China, India and the Middle East, where the consuming class is growing rapidly. The consequences are “potentially far reaching” for global energy markets and trade, the

Dr. Birol noted, for example, that Middle Eastern oil once bound for the United States would probably be rerouted to China. American-mined coal, facing declining demand in its home market, is already heading to Europe and China instead.

There are several components of the sudden shift in the world’s energy supply, but the prime mover is a resurgence of oil and gas production in the United States, particularly the unlocking of new reserves of oil and gas found in shale rock. The widespread adoption of techniques such as hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling has made those reserves much more accessible, and in the case of natural gas, resulted in a vast glut that has sent prices plunging.

The report predicted that the United States would overtake Russia as the leading producer of natural gas in 2015.

The strong statements and specific predictions by the energy agency lend new weight to trends that have become increasingly apparent in the last year.

“This striking conclusion confirms a lot of recent projections,” said Michael Levi, senior fellow for energy and environment at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Formed in 1974 after the oil crisis by a group of oil-importing nations, including the United States, the International Energy Agency monitors and analyzes global energy trends to insure safe and sustainable supply.

Mr. Levi said that the I.E.A. report was generally “good news” for the United States because it highlights the nation’s new sources of energy. But he cautioned that being self-sufficient did not mean that the country would be insulated from seesawing energy prices, since those oil prices are set by global markets.

Report Sees U.S. as Top Oil Producer, Overtaking Saudi Arabia, in 5 Years - NYTimes.com

Here is the thing that i don't get. The proven oil reserves of Venezuela is about 288 billion barrels and Saudi-Arabia is about 267 billion barrels. The proven oil reserves of the US is only about 20,7 billion barrels. If the US is going to produce even more oil then Saudi Arabia. Then her oil reserves will run out way before 2030.

The Venezuelan oil is an awful type of oil deep in sea. The Canadian oil is very expensive to extract.
US has not much oil but they will produce a lot for a while.
Russia and Norway dont have a lot of oil either but they are producing a lot.
Russian oil will be finished in 15 years.
Norwegian oil will be finished in 9 years.

And saudis are pumping sea water into deep earth to bring oil up due to lackof pressure.:smokin::coffee::usflag:

Why wont they be? They stole oil from oil rich countries and now they want iran oil fields.... America wont attack africa.... No oil over there.... Middle east got plenty oil....

Its shale Oil baby. The US has the biggest reserve in the world !!! Thanks to high crude prices, the domestic market is about to get flooded with Shale Rock oil.

A boom in natural gas production has set prices of natural gas and propane plunging in the U.S market.

Yes we do.
But we have oil for the next 60 years. US has 10-20 times less extractable oil. Frankly it is KSA, UAE, Iraq and Iran. The rest of the oil is very expensive.

Yes it is Shale but Shale is expensive.

There is some oil in the north pole and above 60 region. Like Canadian oil, it is expensive.
You can make energy out of sewage too but expensive.
PS. I dont troll. I have a life too.

and we got the money:)

It is not just the new discoveries that promote this trend, More fuel efficient vehicles and even alternative vehicles such as electric cars will contribute.

Normally I am not one to promote the idea that the auto industry will be radically changed by electric vehicles, but with the response I've seen about the Tesla Model S among others, I think that Electric vehicles might be on to actually carving out at least a significantly larger niche to sell their products to than already exists in the next decade or so.
