U.S. tightens passenger screening for 14 countries

U.S.-bound air travellers from 14 nations the U.S. considers to be sponsors of terrorism or "countries of interest" began facing tougher screening measures on Monday, prompted by the attempt to bomb a plane flying to Detroit last month.

The new rules mean that "every individual flying into the U.S. from anywhere in the world travelling from or through nations that are state sponsors of terrorism or other countries of interest will be required to go through enhanced screening," the U.S. Transportation Security Administration said in a statement on Sunday.

The U.S. State Department lists Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria as state sponsors of terrorism. The countries of interest include Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen.

Passengers from those countries will now be subject to enhanced screening techniques, including body scans, pat-downs and a thorough search of carry-on luggage.

The TSA also announced that passengers on U.S.-bound international flights will be subject to enhanced screen technologies and random screening.

Airports were also directed to increase "threat-based" screening of passengers who may be acting in a suspicious manner.

The U.S. government also added dozens of people to its terrorist watch and no-fly lists, a crackdown that comes as President Barack Obama prepares to meet Tuesday with his team of advisors about the state of national security.

The security measures follow the attempt to detonate an explosive on a U.S.-bound flight from Amsterdam on Christmas Day.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian man, is accused of trying to ignite the bomb on the Northwest Airlines flight. Officials said he has told U.S. investigators he received training and instructions from al-Qaeda operatives in Yemen.

On Sunday, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said full-body scanners will be introduced in Britain's airports.

Last week, the Dutch government announced it will begin using full-body scanners for flights heading to the United States.

Well they have not labeled Pakistan as a sponsor of terror, however if in Pakistan we have check posts in every city scrutinizing the citizens then definitely US will have to place extra checks as well.

It is because of Taliban and Al Qaeda...do you even need to wonder?

Thanks to our open arms policy in Zia era many refugees have Pakistani Passports and that too is something which has always caused huge problem for us because the drug mafia used this to their advantage since the 80s and now we have entered the age of modern terrorism.

Unitedstates and Isreal are the TOP Terrorist supporter in the world and also doing Terrorist activities around the world killing innocent civilians (Only Muslims) and now they are selling Weapons to india and in future both will use INDIA against China and Pakistan thats why their plans and Indians already knows that but i have also doubt on INDIAN-US weapons deals i heared and read also on some forums and boards where i saw something fishy btw US-INDO deals (India 70% chances to get European or Russian weapons rather thn go for American weapons or any American deal because they knows in Future same like others US will add Strings and use India.

no big deal.....i dont find it offensive that our country is on the list.

Informed Americans are well aware about huge contributions (professors, doctors, surgeons, physicists, engineers etc.) of Pakistani and Pakistani-Americans in U.S.

as long as you havent done anything wrong, then fine --- you will be inconvenienced for a few minutes then free to do as you please.

Its not countries streading terrorism but coutries of interest.. read coutries that have some people who are inclined towards terrorist activities. Goes to show that a handful of bad people can create such issues for large countries like pakistan, SA etc.

how is Syria (a secular, moderate country with dynamic and friendly population) or Iran a state sponsor of terrorism? No high profile suspects like the hi jackers came from these countries. Of course they help Hezbollah but that group doesn't even have a global agenda, its purely Lebanese. Yemen, Somalia and Nigeria are understandable, as the situations in the first 2 countries are really spiralling out of control. Its unfair how the irresponsible actions of a few people can adversely affect the situation for huge sums of innocent and good intentioned civilians.
