Workers in New Delhi remove a section of the barricade that had been placed as a safety measure outside the main entrance of the U.S. Embassy. The removal of the barricade is reportedly in retaliation for what India says is the mistreatment of New York-based Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade. (Saurabh Das / Associated Press / December 17, 2013)

WASHINGTON – Seeking to defuse a growing dispute, the State Department on Tuesday promised an internal investigation into the arrest of an Indian diplomat in New York and urged New Delhi not to retaliate in ways that threatened the safety of U.S. diplomats.

The arrest Thursday of Indian deputy consul general Devyani Khobragade on federal charges of visa fraud has set off a storm of angry protests in New Delhi, and a stripping of privileges of U.S. diplomats there.

Khobragade was accused of filing false documents to obtain a visa for her housekeeper, and of paying her $3.13 an hour, about one-third the federal minimum wage.

Indian officials have protested that the diplomat was strip-searched and forced to wait in jail with “drug addicts” before she was released on bail.

Indian authorities have demanded an official apology, removed security barriers around the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, withdrawn airport access passes for U.S. diplomats and demanded return of their IDs.

Marie Harf, a State Department spokeswoman, said the department had conveyed to New Delhi at a “high level” U.S. expectations that India follow Geneva Convention rules on protecting diplomats.

“Obviously the safety and security of our diplomats and consular officials in the field is a top priority,” she said.

Harf promised that the Obama administration would look into whether Khobragade was mistreated by the State Department's Diplomatic Security bureau, which arrested her, and then by the U.S. Marshals Service.

So far, she said, indications were that the diplomat was treated according to procedure.

The Marshals Service said in a press release that Khobragade was handled according to “standard arrestee intake procedures” for the Southern District of New York. These include detaining her with other female prisoners while she awaited handling of her case.

Harf insisted that the dispute was an isolated incident and “not indicative of the close and respectful ties that we share” with India.

The Obama administration is not eager for a disruption of its ties with India. It has sought to strengthen its economic relationship with New Delhi, and to bolster security ties amid regional instability and to offset the growing power of China.

It's easy as pie America - apologize to the lady for the ill treatment meted out to her akin to a normal criminal and restore her dignity.

Who the **** brings maid all over to US from India :girl_wacko:

kanthabaaiii chali amrika
VIP culture, Pakistanis and Emarati's do it too apparently. Furthermore why would you need a maid in the US? or Europe, the houses are small like servant quarters, they have the latest cleaning gizmo's like vacuum cleaners, dryers, dish washers, washing machines etc...

Also did I read correctly that minimum wage was also an issue?

She was working as a nanny to take care of the diplomat's kids.. Minimum wage was the issue.. The maid might have thought that she can work anywhere in US once she landed in US and agreed with all the conditions.. Once she reached US only then she realized that she need normal VISA.. Trouble started since she asked for normal Visa and diplomat said she have no authority over it..

Who in their right mind from South Asia would pay 4500 USD as salary for a maid plus all the privileges of free food, diplomatic passport, free accommodation, free travel?

You think US embassies in Pakistan or India pay their local gardeners, drivers and other maids and servants lakhs of rupees per month as salaries?

They employ workers on their sovereign national property aka consulates where their land's law and wages apply, do they pay them equally to what they would pay if they had imported the workers? doesn't it smack of double standards here?

Yes, but we let them compromise our laws, they DO not... That is the difference, No?

So, I guess you should appreciate our stance when we ask them for the local employment roster, bank accounts, payment slips for these workers and the list of workers employed serving these US diplomats - rather than being condescending about it by saying that it's for local consumption. The Indian stance is dead serious about the issue, I wish Pakistan also had the spine for it (pardon me for it).

There's also the case of visa fraud and falsified documents. And more interestingly, the maid was report absconding by India and they'd sought US assistance in locating her.

You're absolutely correct to request the information and protest her mistreatment, but why does Pakistan need to be in the picture?

Because I was replying to RescueRanger from Pakistan and there are some parallels to be drawn from the issues.

YES, YES I DO very much. I Appreciate the stance of the Indian Government, lets hope they have the resolve to see it to the end... STAND YOUR GROUND INDIA! Don't do a Nawaz Shariff on this one!

Well this not VIP problem. If US authorities need to arrest her ,they can gently call her to Marshals Office and arrest or they can enter embassy arrest. This is will resolved many days ago .Now some idiots say diplomat is higher caste,no its not and she is a low caste(dalit). That nanny is fraud ,she want permanent citizenship in US ,now all information revealed. Now US authorities will hunt down her no doubt.
