WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States sent two Navy ships through the Taiwan Strait on Monday as the U.S. military increased the frequency of movement through the strategic waterway despite opposition from China.

The voyage risks further raising tensions with China but will likely be viewed by self-ruled Taiwan as a sign of support from the Trump administration amid growing friction between Taipei and Beijing.

The movement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States and China are “very, very close” to a deal to end a months-long trade war that has slowed global growth and disrupted markets.

The U.S. Navy’s passage through the Taiwan Strait also comes just days before a summit between Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

“The ships’ transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the U.S. Pacific Fleet said in a statement.

The two ships were identified as the destroyer Stethem and Navy cargo and ammunition ship Cesar Chavez, the statement added. The 180-km-wide (111.85 miles) Taiwan Strait separates Taiwan from China.

Washington has no formal ties with Taiwan, but is bound by law to help defend the island nation and is its main source of arms. The Pentagon says Washington has sold Taiwan more than $15 billion in weaponry since 2010.

Us Navy can sail thro' the Taiwan strait as it is international water. What is the problem?
It is their unspoken intention which is to intimate China with gunboat policy same as they used on the Japanese with their "Black ships" centuries ago.

The Black ships did not come to protect anyone and was gunboat deplomacy. This time, the USN not make threats to China. They are reassuring Taiwan. Taiwan wants US defense. China is the one using gunboat diplomacy on Taiwan in the form of balistic missiles.

What is the gunboat policy?
The gunboat policy refers to the pursuit of foreign policy objectives with the aid of naval power. It is a display of military power.

There were no balistic missiles or airplanes when the term was created. But in principle, China is using its balistic missiles against Taiwan just like how "gunboat policy" was used. Let's not play stupid now...

That is your personal creation. You just play play with words.

Gunboat policy or gunboat diplomacy concerns two nations, that is why it involve FOREIGN policy. Taiwan is part of China, globally recognised by all except a few tiny states, and also recognised by United Nation and all its agencies. Gunboat policy does not apply in internal conflict of a nation.

Any conflict between Mainland China and Taiwan is internal affairs of China, and if war will to be erupt again, it shall be the final phase of Chinese Civil War that was halted after KMT retreated to Taiwan.

Check it out definition of gunboat policy on established dictionaries or an institution of authority on words and phrases.

And please DO NOT use any INSULT WORDS such as you are stupid.

Its so clear that if CN dont do what US tell her to do, then US will slap 25% tariff to destroy CN economy plus helping TW and HK leader like Joshua Wong to take half of CN when CN fall into chaos ( in 2023)

Taiwan is not part of China. Taiwan has democracy. China does not. Taiwan has its own government and armed forces. Taiwan fighters jets were supported by US tech, not Chinese. Future Taiwan subs are supported by Japanese tech, not Chinese.

When CN in chaos (in 2023) due to 25% tariff, then US will help TW, HK to take half of CN again and also take back the seat in UN.

Americans and their lapdogs always get so riled up over this. Almost like they are really desperate for people to know they are acting like dicks, trespassing into Chinese waters, while pointing a gun at the owners.

Because of legacy of Chiang Kai-shek and his claim of being the one China. But he lost. In the past, Taiwan was imperial territory of the Qing dynasty just like how Taiwan was once territory of Imperial Japan. Taiwan was never part of China's long ancient history. It was conqured by run away Ming and invading Qing. Even the Spanish and Dutch were in Taiwan before the Ming and Qing. During its time as Qing, there was lots of rebellions. Today, Taiwan regards period as part of Japan better then when it was part of China. But no one sees Japan claiming that Taiwan is Japanese territory. CCP China is using the made up line that Taiwan is part of China. If China would give up its balistic missile gunboat diplomacy, Taiwan would aoready have abondoned the China name.

Good that US warship wants to.come within DF-21D antiship ballistic missile range. :enjoy:

That is the most foolish things to do.

As both side of the strait are Chinese territory, China could first designate the water as internal water. As the right to transit or innocent passage only applies when there is no alternative water way, China could close the strait to foreign traffic thereafter.
