That's a stupid comparison, back then China was a backward feudal society without any industrys, fighting Europeans were literally bringing a knife to a gun fight, but now China is the world biggest industrial nation, producing and consuming over half of the world total steel. Even a child won't compare today's China with China over 100 years ago or not even 40 years ago.
