MOSCOW, May 12 (RIA Novosti) - The United States has bought two Su-27 Flanker fighter jets to help train U.S. pilots to cope with the growing number of Russian 4th-generation aircraft sold around the globe, a U.S. online magazine said.

The two planes have been bought from a private Ukrainian company by the Reno-based Tac Air, which provides training and test support for the military.

The aircraft will also be used to test the effectiveness of new U.S. radars and electronic warfare equipment, the Strategy Page reported.

The 33-ton Su-27 is similar to the U.S. F-15, but costs some 30% less, the source said.

Su-27 fighters have been produced in Russia since 1982. They are still widely used in the Russian Air Force and are gradually undergoing maintenance repairs to extend their service life.

The Su-27 Flanker and its variant, the Su-30 Flanker C, account for a major share of Russia's arms exports. In the past, Russia's Sukhoi aircraft maker sold Su-27 and Su-30 fighters to China, India, Malaysia, Venezuela and Algeria.

In 2007, Sukhoi exported 50 of these aircraft, accounting for 50% of Rosoboronexport's export revenues.

According to U.S. sources, the two aircraft, which have been acquired in a commercial variant, stripped of weaponry, are being overhauled and modified by the U.S. Pride Air company.

Imagine the consequences of US fighters being sold to Venezuela or Iran through a third country...

Old news. We have been purchasing Soviet junks since the ignoble and spectacular collapse of the Soviet Union. When that happened, the former Soviet satellites became possessors of many Soviet arms. Most of them did not have the necessary training to maintain them, let alone fly or operate them and they need cash to keep their economies going, now that the Soviets can no longer support them. The list was comprehensive, from ground support equipments to tanks to aircrafts to missiles. Rumors had it we shipped a few Soviet ICBMs back to the US.

Air Force declassifies elite aggressor program
From 1977 through 1988, the program, known as Constant Peg, saw Air Force, Navy and Marine aircrews flying against Soviet-designed MiG fighters as part of a training program where American pilots could better learn how to defeat or evade the Communist bloc's fighters of the day.
What distinguished Constant Peg from the USN's Top Gun and the USAF's Fighter Weapons School was that Top Gun and FWS focuses on tactics while Constant Peg gave our pilots experience against the actual hardware. Not only that, even when the Soviet Union existed, former Soviet satellites like Egypt had no problems allowing US to fly and study their equipments. We know far more about Soviet hardwares than the reverse. This is why even though we may give praise to Soviet designers, and they do deserve them when due, we always chuckled at these comparisons that have nothing but specs on paper to support the many arguments on how Soviet junks...err...I mean...jets are superior to Western counterparts.

Just keep your American rumours and fantasies to yourself. We need facts here.

This guy actually has the nerves to call anything Russian junk yet his own air force buys the stuff in order to study and counter it. Isn't that a little contradictory? Make up your mind and stop believing in fairytale rumours... You just worry about your diminishing economy and superpower status. You just worry about the millions of debt owing jobless Americans in your country before pointing fingers at others.

People...You do not recognize gratuituous insults when you see one? After all, the Soviet Union was our enemy. As far as 'facts' goes, I have supported my arguments with sufficient facts to debunk a few 'fantasies' here.

Nice fantasies you got there. Russian enmity is one thing, but to label anything Russian as junk is an outrageous lie. It's the most biased view one can portray.

Two Su-27s were delivered to the United States in 1995, probably for aggressor training. (see e.g. : Gordon, Yefim and Peter Davison. Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker, Specialty Press, 2006. ISBN 978-1-58007-091-1. p 101.). So either there are now 4 or these 2 are to replace thwe older ones.

It does not say much for the Russians when they offer up their frontline fighters as joyrides for wealthy capitalists...

I'm pretty sure the Su-27 in question are demilitarized i.e. without weapons and required sensors. Which means they will primarily be used for training dogfighting and not much else. So there will be a vast difference with a present day (upgraded) Su-27 in service (e.g. Su-27SM, SU-35BM) or newer variants (e.g. Su-30 MKK, Su-30MKI, Su-33, Su-34, Su-35, Su-37).
