Personally, I don't see how Russia can give the four Kurils to Japan. Unlike Senkaku which is not inhabited, these islands are inhabited by tens of thousands of Russian citizens. If Putin forces these Russian citizens to move out of the islands, then Putin can kiss himself and his party goodbye. There would be a new nationalistic Russian president in office.

You see the flag of Sakhalin? All the Kurils islands are on it. All of them.

Putin is already under fire for not helping Donbas rebels enough.

Almost all Russian politicians are more war hawk than Putin. Even Mironov wants to take over all of Ukraine. Mironov visited rebel held Donbas. Putin never did that.

When Russia gave a tiny island in the river to China in 2008, the island is not inhabited. The Kurils are inhabited by tens of thousands of Russian civilians. No way Japan can get Kurils.

Japan claiming Kurils is the same as Argentina claiming Falklands.

No country has ever in the history of humankind given an inhabited land to another country. And Putin is not going to break that record.

I don't get why Japan is claiming the Kurils. Might as well claim the southern half of Sakhalin since Japan once had it after winning the Russia Japan war.
