This is good actually. Pakistan can expose American double standards on every forum when ever they start saying us same.

Odd. The U.S. designated Omar a terrorist years ago, tried killing him last year, and I think has offered a multi-million dollar reward for information. Why wouldn't the U.S want him on the list?

And why are all the official sources from Pakistan's foreign ministry and talking off-the-record? U.S. media would use more than one source before running with such a story, especially since the U.N. has many members so anonymous confirmation is easy.

Pakistani media self-censorship seems to have increased over the past month or so considerably, to the point where important information behind a story is simply omitted: link. Is that what is going on here?

See here:

“We are aware that the UN Al-Qaeda/ISIL Sanctions Committee did not approve Pakistan's proposal to list Umer Khalid Khurasani a.k.a Abdul Wali, the leader of Jamat-ul-Ahrar since it could not reach consensus due to objection by a member,” Foreign Office spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal said on Friday.

“As the discussions of the Sanctions Committee are confidential, we are not in a position to comment on these deliberations. The Committee has not yet formally conveyed this development to us,” he said.

“However, we are deeply disappointed over the failure of the Sanctions Committee to list Wali who is a known terrorist and has the blood of hundreds of innocent Pakistanis on his hands.”

He said that if the organization Jamaat-ul-Ahrar has been listed by the Sanctions Committee, its leader should also have been listed.

“This action demonstrates the double standards prevailing in the international fight against terrorism and also show complete disregard of the sacrifices rendered by Pakistan in this fight,” he added.

A much better article. However, it is apparent that the Dr. Faisal doesn't know if the objection was final, temporary, or procedural - the last a definite possibility since there's been no official decision yet "conveyed". He is the only person scream-labeling the act as "double standards". In a few days he may know more, after the decision is conveyed.

Alternately the Pakistani Foreign Ministry might be trying to get this information out prior to a final decision to try and bring about some pressure on the US to change its (privately conveyed) position.

Is that really likely? It worked out very poorly for Pakistan the last time - that's how Pakistan ended up faced with returning to the terror financing list next month. I would have thought the Foreign Ministry had learned its lesson.

The last time Khawaja Asif shot off his mouth on a development that (initially) favored Pakistan, allowing the US to exert pressure on other entities and have the decision changed prior to final voting.

This time around, if the US is in fact advocating double standards in combating terrorism, Pakistan has nothing to lose by highlighting (initial/private) US opposition towards sanctioning a known terrorist leader.

My advice is not to jump to conclusions over a matter before it is crystal clear. Objection can be on technical grounds or due to a reason which is not clear yet. Media have the unfortunate habit of sensationalizing stuff for ratings.

American forces have assassinated TTP members from time-to-time starting with Baitullah Mehsud in 2009. Anybody who thinks that US is a friend of TTP - needs to get his head examined.

Let's wait for an announcement from the State Department before jumping to conclusions.
