The contract for Ay-Class Submarine Outfitting/System Modernization Project, in which STM is the main contractor, was signed on 30 March 2011 with a ceremony at SSM with the participation of sub-contractors.

STM General Manager Recep Barut, in his speech at the ceremony, expressed his belief that the Project will make great contributions to our country and our Naval Forces and said STM was honoured to be the main contractor in such an important project. Recep Barut also stated that the existing team being set up at STM since 2006 has been further developed and has reached the level capable of undertaking submarine modernization projects. Saying that the knowledge and experience STM will be able to gain from the Project cannot be described in measurable terms and that they will endeavour to realize the Project in the best possible way, Recep Barut ended his speech by thanking everyone contributing to the Project and foremost to the personnel at SSM and the Naval Forces Command.

Taking the floor afterwards, SSM Undersecretary Murad Bayar expressed his pleasure in seeing the Project come to life, and emphasized that STM has become a centre of competence on submarines with its vast knowledge and experience, which is important in view of future submarine projects.

At the ceremony, subcontractor contracts were also signed with Aselsan, Zeiss and Raytheon. Under the Project, the youngest Ay-Class submarines in the inventory of the Turkish Naval Forces Command, i.e. the TCG Doğanay (S-351) and TCG Dolunay (S-352) submarines, will be modernized with Inertial Navigation Systems to be procured from Raytheon, the Electronic Support System from Aselsan and Periscopes from Zeiss, and the new systems will be integrated into the submarines.

The Project will be carried out at the Golcuk Shipyard Command of the Turkish Naval Forces Command, which has been building submarines for over 35 years with superior experience in the area, and will be supported with the workforce, knowledge and experience of both the Shipyard and the Naval Forces Command.

Under the Project, it is planned that STM will, in addition to undertaking the platform integration of the systems, provide Integrated Logistic Support, spare parts, support equipment and outfitting, technical documentation, training, and technical assistance/support services.

The foreseen duration of the Project is around 4 years.
