ISLAMABAD: Police have detained two suspects for their alleged role in influencing Malik Mumtaz Qadri to assassinate Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, sources privy to the investigation told Dawn on Friday.
One was picked up from Lahore and the other from Rawalpindi. Scrutiny by investigators of the killers mobile record led to their arrest, the sources said, adding that a few days before the crime Qadri had met one of them in Lahore. A medical board comprising doctors of the District Headquarters Hospital in Rawalpindi conducted a medical examination of Qadri on Thursday night.
Anti-Terrorism Court judge Malik Akram Awan had issued the order after Qadris counsel complained that he had been subjected to severe torture and not provided meal. Marks of alleged electric shock on the killers abdomen were also shown to the judge.
The hour-long medical examination was conducted at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. Qadri was later taken to an unspecified place in an armoured personnel carrier.
The medical board will submit its report at the next hearing on Jan 11.
The sources said that during the interrogation Qadri had stood by his earlier statement that he was not under any influence and killed the governor for his remarks on the blasphemy law.
SECURITY ORDER: A three-member police team, formed by the Punjab government to examine a security order issued by Rawalpindi police for the protection of Salman Taseer, arrived in Islamabad on Friday afternoon.
The team comprises Additional Inspector General of Punjabs Special Branch Nasir Khan Durrani, Additional Inspector General of CID Mushtaq Sukhaira and DIG Shoaib Dastgeer.
The order, issued by Superintendent of VIP Security Wing Chaudhry Hanif, was shown to the inquiry team. According to the order, SP Sikander Hayat was overall in charge of the governors security, but he was not with the squad when Mr Taseer was gunned down.
Sikander Hayat appeared before the inquiry team on Thursday night and recorded his statement. According to a source, the SP categorically denied that he had received intimation for the governors security.
There was no security lapse during the governors visit to Islamabad and the security was provided in accordance with the plan, Regional Police Officer Mukhtar Ahmed Gondal said, adding that it was not important for the in-charge to be present with the convoy.
SUSPENDED: RPO Gondal suspended on Thursday night two low-ranking offers of the Security Brach for ignoring a letter seeking a fresh verification and security clearance of all Elite Force personnel. He also sough an explanation from SP Headquarters Rana Shahid.
The officers suspended are inspector-in-charge Khalid Satti and sub-inspector Aajab Khan.
The most important letter, sent by the Elite Force additional inspector general to the former CPO on Dec 11, had sought fresh verification and security clearance from intelligence agencies of all Elite Force personnel, including Mumtaz Qadri.
The City Police Offices Security Branch received the letter on Dec 17, but it kept moving from one table to another and was later forwarded by Khalid Satti and Aajab Khan to four SPs for further action.
RPO Gondal, who accused former CPO Fakhar Sultan of ignoring the letter, said it was traced out only after a fresh reminder was received by him on Wednesday.
