What's new

Two ex PLAN navy frigate joining in 2018 to Bangladesh Navy.

Well BD cannot hope to put up a good fight against India till 2030 anyway. China will by then have a CBG permanently in the IOR region by then.

Anyway a war does not start out of nowhere, there is a buildup that could take weeks and months. Plenty of time to deploy enough naval assets into the IOR region in time to put paid to any Indian wet dreams of interfering with BD shipping.

Only way that I can see BD itself dealing with the IN is by procuring a force of say 6 SSNs from China. If China was inclined to sell, one of these SSNs will come to at least 1 US billion dollars, can BD afford it?

I was referring to the period beyond 2030. By 2030, we should be able to at least have a strong presence in the BoB but after that we need to look forward to the greater IOR. Our economy is projected to be the 23rd largest by 2050 growing at 5%/year, but since projections by the global institutions are usually underestimated for Bangladesh, we could well become the 15th largest at least. Such huge economy will require huge military presence.

Fuckwid logic.

you can buy all the firgates and subs that you want. but truth is without ballistic missle capabilities and a strong airforce bd wont be able to beat anyone.

with subs and frigates all you are doing is increasing time till you are defeated. you are not really increasing chance for victory. for that you will need a strong airforce and ballistic missles that can hit anywhere in india. only then will the indians think 10 times before picking a fight with bangladesh

BD will have to 160 4+/5th get fighters by 2030.
Since BD is defence orientated, it wont be
procuring ballistic missiles.

I support your thought that Bangladesh needs to look beyond BoB... but the way you're looking at it, brings up questions that are difficult to answer.... like why do you think that only after 2030 Bangladesh would develop this kind of needs.... and why do you think that only going the way Indians went can we challenge India.... do you think India would be sitting idle until 2030?...... the point is, the basic thoughts about our defence needs to be addressed.... otherwise all these billions of dollars of investment would be like showcase items....

how can you be so sure that Bangladesh won't get any ballistic missiles?
remember that submarine is one of the most fearsome offensive platform, and Bangladesh have invested in it....there are lots of so-called "Shushil" (funded from outside) who produced this exact argument when Bangladesh acquired submarines...

.
China type-093 nuclear attack submarine has already deter Indian navy in the IOR.
I think the better way is Bengal will develop their economy asap in the coming years till being strong enough to maintain a fleet of nuclear submarines that would be the nightmare of Indian.
What are you smoking...Bangladesh and nuclear submarine doesn't belong in the same sentence.

Could you enlighten us with why you think his logic is flawed...?

Exactly. We cannot grow economically and _not_ have the concurrent growth in our defense capability. Remember I said defense not offense.

Countries like Pakistan with similar total GDP spend far more in defense and have Ballistic missile and nuclear capabilities.

And talking about where Indian Navy is going look at the following,

What are you smoking...Bangladesh and nuclear submarine doesn't belong in the same sentence.
At some point in time almost all submarines will have safe nuclear propulsion. We have to keep our minds open to these possibilities.

What countries operate nuclear powered submarines at this point in time? US, Russia, China, UK, France, India via lease from Russia? Am I missing any? And then comes Bangladesh... Come on guys.

Both Pak and BD lease 2 093 SSN from China.

Impossible.

Actually I can't speak for Pakistan.

But for BN to lease 2 Type 093 is unimaginable at the present time or even for the long term future. Lol we just bought two old Mings...

.
Impossible

Never ever say Impossible, According to BD's economy growth, Population, 2030 defence goals, etc ... @UKBengali

Burma is ordering Russian Kilo Sub (non AIP) right now or near future, And China is gonna put Mini Nuclear Reactor on 3,500 - 4,000T AIP Subs soon.

It would be great for BD Navy to have 2-4 039C AIP Subs from China in 2018-2024, and lease 2 093 SSN or buy 2 AIP Subs with Mini Nuclear Reactor from China in 2025-2030. TOT agreements would be great for BD.

the idea of SSN in BN at the current time period or even in near future is something i cant digest. what we should be looking for are some modern SSP(AIP). with the low defense budget that we have i can only hope for 4 SSP and the 2 mings we already have to make it a 6 boats sub force by 2030!!!

.
Guys let us not rule out BD having SSNs by 2030 just because the economic and maybe political situation now does not make this possible. Remember BD economy in real terms will be more than twice as large than it is now by 2030.

Chinese SSNs will still be significantly cheaper than Western ones and China just maybe inclined to sell them to BD in the 2025-2030 timeframe. A force of say 3-4 SSNs will make the idea of India even attempting blockade BD shipping silly.

And before people jump in and start talking about India using nuclear weapons, that is not going to happen as India wont use nukes if a BD submarine sinks a India ship that is obstructing legal BD international shipping, and also any nuclear attack on BD would irradiate tens of millions of Indians across the border.

@dy1022 : Can you supply any further specs on this 4,000 tonne SSN that China is planning to build? I would expect the endurance of this sub to be less than the common 90 days of standard SSNs but if it has the normal SSN speed and say at least 60 day endurance then it will be sufficient for BD needs.
