Two China-built Structures Stand Firm after Strong Quake in Ecuador
2016-04-25

Two buildings are standing firm in Portoviejo, Ecuador, after the devastating earthquake on April 17.
They are the Ecuador 911 Safety Emergency Response Command Center and a 508-bed hospital, both built by the China CAMC Engineering company.

The 911 center is Ecuador's public safety platform, which has been playing a vital role in emergency response and relief resource allocation.

Although the outer walls partially cracked and some parts of the building were damaged, its main structure remains intact.

Xiao Tiekui is the project manager of China CAMC Engineering.

"From the very beginning of our project, we have taken into account in our design the need for earthquake resistance. We designed the project in accordance with Ecuador's highest standards against possible earthquakes. The building is of steel and reinforced concrete structure, which ensures high shock resistance. The current condition shows that the whole center is operating normally."

Not far from the 911 center is the 508-bed hospital, another major project undertaken by CAMC Engineering. The building, which is still under construction, is standing firm after the strong quake and aftershocks.

The Chinese engineering company has also organized a rescue team armed with 17 vehicles for excavation to the affected areas in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake.

The team has pulled at least two people alive from under the rubble. Both are now out of danger after medical treatment.

you are making it sound like all the non-Chinese built buildings collapsed, they didn't right:o:

Chinese build great for export but in China I think it's another story.

Chinese Rescue Team Work in Quake-hit Ecuadorian Town

Chinese rescuers have brought relief supplies to Canoa, a coastal town of Ecuador badly hit by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on April 16.

The rescuers come from government and private organizations as well as Chinese enterprises in Ecuador.

Canoa, located in the west of the Ecuadorian capital Quito, saw nearly 85 percent of its houses collapse.

Local people, who have also been hit by water and electricity outages, are in urgent need of daily necessities.

Margarita Miranda is a resident of Canoa

"This is the arrival of the first batch of relief materials here. They brought rice, sugar, drinking water, and canned food, which all are what we urgently need now."

The disaster area is also facing the threat from epidemic outbreaks as temperatures have risen above 30 degrees Celsius since the quake happened.

Wang Gang, a member of the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, is in Canoa and describes the situation on the ground:

"There are many rotten bodies, which are stinking and breeding virus. When we arrived here, local doctors told us that the environment is very bad, and that they are short of disinfection liquid and equipment. We have divided the area into sections, and we are clearing them one after another every day."

The situation may worsen if it rains, as mosquitos are likely to breed more quickly, and water sources may become polluted.

Chinese rescuers say they will continue relief efforts and education to prevent epidemics in the worst-hit areas until the local government can complete the relocation of residents and the clearing of debris.

China's helping hand in Ecuador earthquake

Debris of a house remain in the floor after an earthquake in Quito, Ecuador, on April 16, 2016. The number of victims of the earthquake that struck off the coast of Ecuador on Saturday has increased to 41, local media reported, citing Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas. [Xinhua/Str]

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which jolted Ecuador on April 16 (local time), has killed 525 people, leaving 2,658 injured and 231 still missing. With water and electricity being cut off in the disaster-stricken areas, along with the hot and humid climate, it is highly possible that infectious diseases like Zika and dengue fever will break out in the small Latin American nation.

The government says the earthquake, the strongest one since 1949, has cost the country US$3 billion in economic losses and that reconstruction could take years.

Clearly, it has devastated this developing country with a land area of 256,000 square kilometers and a GDP of US$98.93 billion.

During this hard time, China quickly reached out to help. Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a message of condolences to his Ecuadorian counterpart Rafael Correa on the second day of the deadly disaster. The Red Cross Society of China also announced it would provide US$100,000 in cash for emergency assistance to its counterpart as the Chinese government is accelerating the drafting of a humanitarian assistance plan. China also pledged to provide satellite pictures to the country for relief efforts, according to a spokesperson with China's Foreign Ministry.

Ecuador officials appreciated the quick response made by the Chinese government, the first to have delivered humanitarian assistance to them.

Chinese enterprises in Ecuador also sent helping hands to those in need, especially those in the hardest hit areas like Provincia de Manabí. Rescue equipment such as excavators, lift trucks and cranes were quickly sent there along with on-the-spot professional instructions.

Moreover, Chinese businesses rushed to repair the disrupted telecommunications services within 15 minutes after the deadly quake. Some Chinese employees working in the country also donated their blood voluntarily, and provided medical equipment, drugs, candles and subsistence for the local community.

A week before the earthquake, the Chinese-built Coca Codo Sinclair hydropower station was officially put into use in Ecuador. The station withstood the devastating earthquake and is providing consistent energy for disaster relief efforts, saving countless lives.

The country's Public Security Command and Control Center, which was also built by Chinese companies, played a vital role during the rescue efforts as it received over 5000 SOSs after the deadly earthquake.

The strategic partnership between the two countries, which was forged in 2015, has been consolidated in the relief process. The Chinese government and its people are trying to soothe the disaster-hit country with generous contributions and loving hearts.

Hope the new buildings in Yunnan can be more resistant to earthquakes

China is improving on their quality but still much of the products made in China..even of good quality failed to perform because due to pressures of cutting cost they will play in the specifications...true that reputation of "Made in China" is improving but I think bad reputation is hard to wash away after you have whole sale the country as cheapest manufacturing destination..I face this in industrial goods every day..and for every geniune product there are thousands of Chinese imitations..the end result is that Made in China is al together banned from projects.

Does posting a few odd out example proves your point? If I use your standard. Buildings in US must be crapped, right?

OH us standard ha ha ha

Hey before you post you should actually read up on what happened. The two videos you quickly used as examples aren't even building collapses. Both happened during building demolitions

Here is the link in the comment for the first youtube video you posted.

Four injured after wall collapse in Midtown Manhattan

"Four construction workers were injured Tuesday following a wall collapse in Midtown Manhattan, officials said.
The four men were doing demolition on the first floor mezzanine inside the Madison Ave. office building near E. 43rd St. at about 10 a.m. when a masonry wall began falling towards them, officials said.

The workers fell off the mezzanine onto the floor one story below, officials said.
They fell about 15 feet," he said. "The workers had removed whatever debris that was on top of them. They were not trapped when we got here."
A chandelier and a marble bannister also fell, Meara said.

Paramedics rushed the workers to Bellevue Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The worst injury was a broken bone, one source with knowledge of the incident said.

The workers were conscious and alert, but brought out of the building on stretchers, witnesses said.

“They looked paralyzed. They looked stiff,” said Jalika Hill, 21, who was walking to H&M as the workers were being carted out of the 13-story building. “I was shocked. I thought an elevator got stuck.”

The cause of the collapse was being investigated."

Oh wow...an inside wall being demolished falls on some workers and suddenly that is considered a "building collapse"

The comment under the second video
"A construction worker died Friday morning when an eight-story building collapsed during demolition to clear space for a luxury Midtown hotel."

That's still China, LOL.

@TaiShang bro, you surely know where to dig up news. ;)

It is all about creating an alterative discourse. Better than singing to the tune of others' songs.

Chinese system helps Ecuador

A security command and control system in Ecuador developed by Tsinghua University and two other Chinese companies has contributed greatly to rescue missions after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake, Tsinghua said on Tuesday.

The ECU911 system helped to send information about the situation on the ground in the affected areas to relevant agencies quickly, reduce rescue time and improve the effectiveness of the government's rescue efforts, Tsinghua said in an article on its website.

Built by Tsinghua, along with the China Electronics Import and Export Corp and Beijing Global Safety Technology Co, the ECU911 system went into operation in 2015, according to the article.

Does it matter? Becos it happened becos of sub standard work. I thought you american are world class and nothing can happen? :D Insult other of sub standard then you shall look at the mirror yourself first. Or you american can continue your long traditon of lying by claiming the workers for that demolition work are all Chinese. American can never has fault?

American are a bunch of species living on lies and pulling down on others. That is much worst than sub standard work. It speaks more on less on the characters.
