A covert state-backed social media campaign run from China has sought to undermine ongoing demonstrations in Hong Kong, according to information released by Twitter and Facebook on Monday.

Some accounts called protesters "cockroaches" or compared them to Islamic State terrorists. All the offending accounts have been taken down from Twitter and Facebook.

Twitter said it identified a network of more than 900 accounts that "were deliberately and specifically attempting to sow political discord in Hong Kong, including undermining the legitimacy and political positions of the protest movement on the ground."

This is the first time tech companies have pointed the finger at Beijing for covert efforts to influence messaging around the Hong Kong protests. Democracy demonstrators have massed throughout Hong Kong for 11 consecutive weekends.

An account that was titled "Dream News" tweeted about the demonstrators, "We don't want you radical people in Hong Kong. Just get out of here!"

The accounts posted in multiple languages and at least some of them appeared to target American audiences. One account, that was set up more than 10 years ago, said in its Twitter bio, "Conservative News from the USA and Abroad. #Catholic Defender of the Constitution of the United States." The account claimed to support President Donald Trump.

Other accounts also purported to be operated by people in the United States, listing locations like Chicago and Long Beach, California.

Twitter initially identified the network and shared details about the accounts with Facebook. Then, Facebook identified about a dozen pages, accounts and groups that were tied to the operation.

"Although the people behind this activity attempted to conceal their identities, our investigation found links to individuals associated with the Chinese government," Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook's head of cybersecurity policy, wrote in a blog post.

The Facebook pages were followed by about 15,000 accounts, the company said.

Twitter said many of the accounts accessed its platform using virtual private networks because Twitter is blocked in China.

China, of course, is not alone in using social media to spread unrest. Covert campaigns have been tied to Russia and Iran, among other countries.

In 2018 the US Department of Justice brought charges against a Kremlin-linked troll group that had posed as American on social media in the run-up to the 2016 US presidential election.

FB and Twitter just show it's double standard and so called fake freedom of speeches. It's selective freedom.

How do they identify troll? Speak against HK protestor is troll. Talk bad about China is good and real. LOL..

I must say Chinese are pretty badass , they've got their tech burglars all over the US , their navy is #1 , they can copy pretty much evrything which they see ... thats why they make uncle sam anxious and frustrated , i'm lovin' it ...

When will Twitter and FB allow people to speak freely against the atrocities committed by Indian forces in occupied Kashmir? These hypocrites love to highlight selective propaganda.

False propaganda against China is kosher and allowed. Freedom of speech against vicious Indian forces in occupied Kashmir is disallowed and gets you banned.

I sure they are going to follow this up and ban and call out the countless U.S. government officials and U.S. government financed and controlled "indpendend" "non-government" organziations openly endorsing and whitewashing U.S. government organized terrorism in China on their platforms just like they never did even as other terrorist used their platform to organize, promote and recruit for terror attacks and murders in Western China and this isnt just some hilariously farcial and poorly excused censorship of people simply opposing evidently foreign instigated and organized terrorism by the double tongued preachers of this hollow phrase "freedom of speech" on behalf of their murderous regime.

U.S. government officials are caught redhanded on camera, U.S. government associated "journalists" are caught lying to give terrorists and wannabe terrorists legitimacy and undermining the Chinese police, their so called NGOs arent even hiding that they are run by the U.S. government and all of them can slander and demonize China on their platforms and then you get filmsy excuses like "our investigation found links to individuals associated with" to censor any opposing voices (Like all the "protest" leaders are directly associated with the U.S. government? Like Twitter and Facebook are run by invididuals associated with the U.S. government?)? Are they even trying or have they brainwashed U.S. citizen so much that this is all it takes now?
