MOSCOW, June 3. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Wednesday that SCO is developing rather successfully, gaining more weight.

"Our organization is developing quite successfully. Interest in the work of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has been shown by 12 countries, besides today’s members of the organization," Putin said.

He said there is an agreement to consider the issue on the admission of India and Pakistan to SCO. "Other countries would also like to strengthen our contacts with our organization and this is logical, because it is gaining more and more weight and more significance," said the Russian leader.

The president said that this happens because SCO addresses most vital issues for the region’s countries: security, combating terrorism and the drug threat and organized crime. "Certainly, there are also issues related to the development of our states’ economies," Putin said.

He welcomed the SCO countries’ foreign ministers in the Russian capital, saying that their meeting, in essence, is completing the major preparatory work for the organization’s summit due in Ufa (capital of the Bashkortostan republic in the Volga region) in July.

"I hope that a number of issues that have been prepared both within the framework of your departments and other ministries will be coordinated by your and submitted to the heads of state for consideration and approval," the Russian leader told the ministers.

He also said that thus the current SCO Council of Foreign Ministers is a key event within the framework of the summit preparation.

The organization brings together Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan, India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan have observer status, while Belarus, Turkey and Sri Lanka are dialogue partners.

Chinese foreign minister put no arms on the table.A sign of disagreement?

In the past, China and Russia have kept some reservation of expanding the membership to other nations that is sensitive to US, but now to counter US's menace and threat in this world, I think both countries will welcome other geopolitcal key players such Iran and even nations in South America such as Cuba and even middle east actors. In the cold war only Soviet block was against US block while China was more less neutral. Now with SCO, the combinasion of China +Russia will be a solid counterweight to US imperialism and domination...Both nations are more likely to promote this organization to highter and more sophisticated level not only the economic block but geopolitic and even military organization.

Reading body language of Chinese leaders? I though that was the specialty of Western China experts. LOL.

I wonder if Iran will be allowed as a full member. That's in my view, is more strategically important than India and Pakistan's prospective membership.

Are you trying to start a cold war here?

China's policy has been to stay neutral in Middle East. That means not taking side in the Shia-Sunni conflict. And frankly, if you take strategic side of Iran, you are at a disadvantage, because Turkey, Saudi, and Israel will all band together against Iran. Those 3 are enough to keep Iran in check.

You should at least think before proposing random things.

SCO is nothing like the alliances US is building. Central Asia is generally only ambivalent about both China and Russia.

MOSCOW, June 3 (Xinhua) -- China is willing to work with other members of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and work for advancing new breakthrough in all-around cooperation among all partners using the forthcoming Ufa summit as a platform, said visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Wednesday.

During a meeting of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers held here, Wang stressed the importance of continuing to unite SCO as one and strengthening the bloc, saying doing so conforms with every member state's practical needs for development and rejuvenation, meets the trend of regional integration and is conducive to attaining long-term objectives of regional stability and prosperity.

Wang also called for planning of SCO's orientation and preparation for the organization's enlargement, extending more support for each other and working together to safeguard core interests, solidifying and expanding security cooperation to combat threats, as well as improving pragmatic cooperation to boost economic and trade cooperation.

Founded in 2001, the SCO has China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan as its full members, with Afghanistan, India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan as observers and Belarus, Turkey and Sri Lanka as dialogue partners.

Russia holds the rotating presidency of the SCO in 2015, with a summit to be held in Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia, in July.

His back has blocked the sight so u cant tell if his left arm was on the table
If during the whole meeting they were posturing like what you have said then there is something odd to tell in the meeting. Otherwise dont get paranoid unnecessarily

you're right on identifying the man with one hand on the table.
But as I said you cannot judge what they were thinking with the content of a photo

SCO will get more disintegrated within itself when you have in the observers seats
Pakistan and India
Iran and Turkey

Belarus and S Lanka are the strongest candidates for memberships in the org

@Keel is right. That's just one image of the entire meeting. I am sure postures have changed often if these are not robot technocrats, lol.

I agree. But the original five will always have an upper hand and these countries personal vendetta won;t be allowed to derail the institution. NATO is not necessarily a rose garden within itself, but it sustains because every member has some stake and interest in it as well as because they are goaded and guided by the US, the unquestioned leader.

I would personally like to see Afghanistan and Iran in the grouping. Pakistan's participation would be good, as well, because that would increase their capability to war on terror inside and across borders.

Turkey has the least relevant and desired party, really. I do not see one reason why they should be given full status.
