A Turkish President officially visited 27 martyred companions of Prophet Muhammad lying side by side in Diyarbakir for the first time.
The southeastern province of Diyarbakır, which hosts the tombs of many prophets and companions of Prophet Muhammad (sahaba), also hosts 27 sahabas who died during the conquest of Diyarbakir and lying side by side.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul has on Friday made the first official visit to the site.
Among the 27 sahabas, one of the great commanders of Islamic history, Khalid Bin Velid's son Suleyman who had fallen as martyr is most well-known. They all lies side by side at the Suleyman Mosque courtyard in Diyarbakir.
President Abdullah Gul, on the second day of his Diyarbakir visit, visited cultural and spiritual places of the city. After consultations with NGOs in the morning, he listened to Kurdish songs from local artists.
Gul then went to the Hz. Suleyman Mosque that hosts the tombs of many companions of Prophet Muhammad and visited İckale. The Suleyman Mosque is renovated by the Prime Ministry General Directorate of Foundations.
Visited by everyone who goes to Diyarbakir, the area around the Suleymaniye Mosque has been cleaned from buildings under a project carried out for a year. The project aims to clean area and bring tourism to the mosque.
