The “Defense News” mentions that the defense officials of Turkish Military Industry are expecting to complete the signing of a heavy arms export contract with Saudi Arabia but the details of the deal will be taken confidential.
Turkish Defense Minister Fikri Ishik said that the arms deal with Saudi Arabia would be the biggest export deal for Turkish arms industry.
“The Government of Turkey is working on a broad plan to boost Turkish defense exports”, he said. He further added that, “Financing is a major problem for potential markets”.
In turn, a senior Turkish official in the procurement sector refused to comment on the content of the agreement as he said, “It is too early to say what the contract will entail”, but stressed that the negotiations with the Saudi officials are now in the final stage.
A Turkish defense industry source said the deal would include offshore platforms. Saudi Arabia is among the top 10 markets for Turkish arms imports, but its purchases from the Turkish industry are relatively small and are estimated at less than $ 5O Million a year.
At the end of 2015, the two countries discussed cooperation in defense industries at a high-level meeting in the Saudi capital during a visit by Turkish president Rajab Tayyip Erdogan to Riyadh.
