ISLAMABAD: The top Turkish companies have offered to build the Karachi-Lahore Motorway, the new airport for Islamabad and undertake extension of the Lahore airport.
The chiefs of two major Turk companies, STFA and TAV, had a lengthy meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday at the PM House and announced to take part in the bid for the projects.
The prime minister, while welcoming their interest, assured fair dealing on behalf of the government. Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi, who was also present in the meeting, termed the interaction as extremely useful. He said that one of the Turk companies was constructing the most modern and largest airport of the country in Istanbul, three times larger in size than the existing airport of the metropolis.
The meeting was attended by Mehmet Ali Neyzi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) STFA; Riza Arsan, Vice Chairman Pakistan Turkey Business Council; Bulent Ozuturk, Investment Coordinator TAV; Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif; Defence Minister Khawaja Asif; Tariq Fatemi and Special Assistant to the PM on Aviation Captain Shujaat Azim.
Talking to the delegation, the prime minister said Pakistan’s economic policies had begun to show positive results and as a result the foreign investors were keen to harvest benefits of the progressing economy.
Many foreign investors have shown interest in investment in different sectors of the economy, he said. He appreciated the understanding of the Turk entrepreneurs, their keen interest and desire for investment in Pakistan. He said that it was a clear manifestation of Pak-Turk friendship. He recalled his meetings with the Turk political and business leaders in his visit to Turkey in February last.
The CEOs of Turkish companies said their companies had expertise in management and expansion of airports and expressed their interest in investment in this sector in Pakistan. Nawaz said Pakistan was initiating a transparent process for the management of the airports and all the international companies would be invited to compete. He said, “Keeping in view the demands of the customers, we want to develop our airports as per international standards.”The prime minister said Pakistan had provided a friendly environment for foreign investors and its economy was full of opportunities in energy and infrastructure sectors.
