A drone named “Bayraktar TB2,” produced by the Turkish Kale-Baykar joint venture, has successfully completed tests for firing UMTAS missiles developed by the Roketsan company.
The Bayraktar TB2 hit panels, two meters in width and length, on target from a distance of eight kilometers and an altitude of 5,300 meters. The drones, which were used by the Turkish armed Forces (TSK) in November 2014, have a twelve-meter wingspan, weigh 650 kilograms and can fly at an altitude of 27,030. They can stay airborne for more than 24 hours.
UMTAS missiles, with a range of eight kilometers, were initially developed for the use of Turkish T-129 attack helicopters. The domestically produced missiles have a diameter of 160 millimeters, are 1.8 meters long and weigh 38 kilograms. Azerbaijan and Pakistan have been in touch with Turkey to purchase the missiles.
The UAVs are important in Turkey's intensified fight against the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been clashing with security forces in the southeast of Turkey since July, when a three-year long ceasefire was abandoned.
