Turkey’s ‘marry your rapist’ law has taken women’s rights right back to the 1950s

I’ve always been appalled at the fact my Turkish father’s aunt was forced to marry the man who raped her when she was a teenager. I try to console myself with the fact this was a Turkish village in the 1950s and that a lot has changed since then, but with a "marry-your-rapist" bill set to be introduced in Turkey in a matter of days, I’m having difficulty.

This bill will release scores of men who have been sentenced for committing statutory rape – Turkish newspaper Hürriyet estimates this currently stands at around 4000 – on the condition they marry their victim. Whether there will be a limit as to the age difference between the two parties is still undecided. If there is to be one, it will be set at either 10 or 15 years – a small, yet still utterly detestable, concession.

If true. Shocking. Disgusting.

actually this law is common among Muslim nations including Iran and Arab countries the Islamic law does not prevent two person from getting married so they are free the girl is free to marry the rapist if she dose not marry him the guy will get executed if the girl decide to marry him he will get the punishment but he will not get executed this is not new, the rapist will not go free he will just get a reduce sentence plus that he has to obey every reasonable request that the girl or her family place before the wedding, so here Turkey is just trying to join the club nothing more.

I read this earlier. I never comment on Turkish politics, but this was beyond shocking.

The loopholes have been getting closed up. It's a horrible law. Not Islamic at all.

Rape equates to a death sentence, nothing less. This law will basically give an incentive to rapists and that is stupid.

More stupid is the fact that the difference can be upto of 10 years... meaning it legalizes child marriage if the victim is a minor. Moreover, this legalizes martal rape, no?

Even more stupid is that the AKP claims this law is to stop the injustice of child marriages.

Sounds straight up stupid.

Government cannot force anyone in matters of free will.

I think someone screwed up.

well for us girls have to be above at least 14 for most cases its at least 18 years old but the key note here is the girl is not forced to marry him it's a choice for her and she gets to decide if the girl is not above 14 years old the rapist will get the death sentence but again the Turkish law is not complete yet so we have to wait.

Government cannot force anyone in matters of free will.

Man, what kind of a person would want to marry a the person she was raped by and traumatized by; don't you understand, it's a loophole to exert pressure on the girl to marry the rapist, and the loophole was used in other Arab countries too, like Lebanon I believe, but it has slowly been getting removed from law with protests.

So it's shocking to see that it's being added to the law here.

If the bill passes there will be some pretty big protests.

It'll be funny if his supporters try to counter-protest and get shot with rubber bullets again.

He's been making so many mistakes lately, one of them is bound to push the edge. He needs to go. We need a competent leader or else our future isn't going to be good.
