ANKARA — NATO allies Turkey and the US have agreed in principle to provide air support to Syrian rebels fighting the regime of Syria's President Bashar Assad, Turkey's foreign minister said.

The planned air support would protect the Syrian opposition fighters who have been trained and equipped by a joint Turkish-US program at a military base in Turkey, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said. Turkey and the US hope to train up to 15,000 rebels.

A US diplomat in Ankara did not comment on how soon the air support for the rebels could start.

The move marks a departure for Washington from its earlier position in opposing a safe zone for Syrian rebels, observers say. It also could mean broader US involvement in the Syrian conflict.

Cavusoglu did not elaborate on what "in principle" meant, what kind of air power would be provided or by whom.

"They have to be supported via air. If you do not protect them or provide air support, what is the point?" Cavusoglu told reporters in televised remarks. "There is a principle agreement on providing air support. How it is going to be provided is in the responsibility of the army."

Although Turkey and the US agree on supporting moderate Islamist forces fighting in Syria, they disagree on who should be the priority target.

Turkey insists the rebels should be supported to fight primarily Assad's regime in Damascus while the US thinks the priority enemy is the Islamic State group that has captured large swaths of land in Syria and Iraq since last summer.

A senior Turkish diplomat said both enemies could be fought simultaneously if rebels are given sufficient support.

"We need not specify in bold letters which enemy is the worse enemy," he said. "The rebel forces can be trained, equipped and supported enough to fight at more than one front."

What does it mean? Strike out Syrian airforce and airdefence systems.

first stage...
----- no-fly zone, like nato did in iraq.
----- nato air support to ground qaeda/taliban/ikhwaan/jemah/hizb/... "rebels", like happened in libya.

second stage...
----- active nato bombing of syrian airbases.

third stage...
----- nato cruise rocket attacks against syrian government, baath and military buildings.

fourth stage...
----- ground invasion, mass murder of syrian government, nato's mission accomplished.

fifth stage...
----- nato preparation for fighting remnants of syrian army. baath movement. people's militias.

however, in between i hope russia intervenes and syria turns this "civil war" into world war... i dearly hope.

This "support" is one of the reasons ISIS sprung up seemingly out of thin air. Rebels, moderates, call them what you want at the end of the day everyone knows they are jihadists and everyone know what they are fighting for and it isn't democracy or freedom.

Idiots will be idiots, after Afghanistan in the 1980s, Iraq 2003 and recently Syria/ISIS you would think lessons would be learned but i guess you can't undo stupid.

NATO isn't going to intervene and Russia wouldn't get involved anyway. Way too much at stake for both.

Also, Hoping for an open conventional war that would kill hundreds of thousands of people isn't something that we should be doing.

Exactly. A year there was a large faction within the "moderate" FSA that defected to ISIS/Al-Nusra, 1000 fighters total. You can never tell who side a person might be on 1 or 2 years down the road. Arming them with relatively advanced weapons isn't the brightest of ideas.

You can of course hope.

This Çavuşoğlu is a super idiot, not qualified to be a FM, at best he can sell tomatoes in the Bazaar.

After US officials not commeting on the issue. In TRNC Çavuşoğlu said " Suriye’de operasyon yapılırken bu birliklerin gidişleri ya da operasyon dönüşlerinde havadan korunup desteklenmesi de konuşuldu. Havadan destek derken bunlar kararlaştırılıyor. Biz bu konuda ne yapıyorsak, Amerikalılarla yapıyoruz ”

He says, while talking about the moderate rebels. They talked (US and Turkish officials) about providing air support for rebels during their entry into Syria, and while their return...And it's just been talked. Nothing has been decided.
