Turkey to modernize Pakistani Perry class frigates with Genesis

In case someone is interested to read a summary on that combat management system.

Thanks for the informative post SURB but i am more interested in the news piece that provoked you to revive a thread buried back in 2010!
Is there any proceeding that we don't know of? because as far as i know, the whole thing have been shelved and there is no up gradation coming now. I don't think any thing is happening and also don't see a point in upgrading a SINGLE 25 year old stripped boat. No use. As suggested earlier in this thread, the frigate is most likely to see action in the international task force to fight piracy and other such roles. A boat assigned to peace time role and keep Pakistani presence in these things while sparing the big boys for real action.

regards!

No sir, there is no reliable news piece or article in print that i can share with you at this point of time.

But i do have a few questions for you.
Why PN would waste it's man power and expertise (that they have gained on a foreign tour) on 25 year old analogue system?

Do you think we are ahead of our time ,keeping the latest security threats in mind, that we can afford to keep a frigate just like that in terms of equipment?

Can you please name the naval platforms that are a part of that task force and are still operating the analogue system for detection and weapon control?

I hope you'll agree with me that forces around the world usually prepare themselves for wars/naval warfare not for task forces.Following a casual approach of disposing of an asset (and the manpower on it) by a navy like P.N. doesn't appear a judicious use.

We have a very limited arsenal and we'll hardly stand any chance if we find our weapon system meek and weak at the time of conflict with our adversary that is armed to the teeth.About the thread started on 2010 or 05, my idea was not to make a news out of it.After going through the thread i found that the data presented to the members was in bits and pieces and if anyone is concerned about it, a summary may help.

I hope that they are ready when the duty calls them.

went to the naval dockyard recently, there some officers told me that one Type 21 has been decommissioned(i actually saw it, you can see it on Google Maps, its just standing there and rusting away), so its weapons will now be fitted on the OHP instead. so no GENESIS upgrade

Can we not upgrade the 6 ships Type-21 Frigate with China again ?

We can. But they are way beyond their life. Extended modifications to the engines/propulsion costs time and money, so in most cases scrapping them is a better option than upgrading. They were already upgraded after being purchased from the UK.

But type-21s are beauties, no doubt. Elegant frigates.

25 years for a well kept combat vessel is nothing. With proper upkeep and up-gradation the the OHP can easily last another decade. They are big ships, which means they can be armed with SAMs and ASMs, however upgrading just one doesn't make much sense.

What i am worried about more is that 'Raytheon' is written all over the information S.U.R.B posted, meaning American approval for any offensive weapons systems. In that case, Pakistan should stay clear, well clear.

What i don't understand is why would PN buy one OHP only. They should have negotiated a contract with the US navy for at least 4 ships.

A number of OHPs are due to be retired soon from the US Navy.

.
No enough in word war 2 , there were 1000 frigates / ships used to invade Japan

Now compare that to Pakistan's 10 frigates you get the point

. .
This is really an old news and we might in near future give away with USA permission our OHP to Turkey as well as P-3C to any operator

As far as i am concerned, answer to all these questions is "Bad Deal".
It was a bad acquisition when it was being made and it is bad still. A 25 year old platform, stripped of almost all of its fire power was never a deal that made sense. Even though it was financed from FMF but still, why PN agreed to take grace money for such an obsolete system never made any sense.

I agree that we cannot afford to get some special platform just to fill in the task force but also this cannot be used in any significant role concerning national security. We cannot afford to upgrade this with modern weapons (thankfully as investing on a 25 year platform wont be wise). So best use is to send it doing something useless, keep your presence in international platforms and spare the better systems for national defense roles.

Spending 50 60 million on system that will be operational for another 5 to 10 years is not a good choice. Specially keeping in view other better platforms available. Also since we have got one single unit and that seem to be all that we will get, all this up gradation spendings becomes even more lame.

may be it will be used as a SURTASS vessel for PN, anti-sub role strictly
