ISTANBUL: Turkey and Saudi Arabia could launch a ground operation against the militant Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria, while Riyadh is also sending war planes to a Turkish base to fight the extremists, the Turkish foreign minister said Saturday.

“If there is a strategy (against IS) then Turkey and Saudi Arabia could enter into a ground operation,” Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was quoted as saying by the Yeni Safak and Haberturk newspapers after taking part in the Munich Security Conference.

“Some say 'Turkey is reluctant to take part in the fight against Daesh (IS)'. But it is Turkey that is making the most concrete proposals,” he said.

Cavusoglu added that Saudi Arabia, which has become an increasingly close ally of Turkey in recent months, is also sending planes to the Turkish base of Incirlik to fight IS.

“They (Saudi officials) came, did a reconnaissance of the base. At the moment it is not clear how many planes will come,” Cavusoglu said.

Incirlik is a key hub for US-led coalition operations against IS, with planes from Britain, France and the United States carrying out raids inside Syria from the base.

“They (Saudi Arabia) said 'If necessary we can also send troops'. Saudi Arabia is showing great determination in the fight against terror in Syria,“ said the Turkish minister.

Saudi Arabia and Turkey both see the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as essential for ending Syria's five-year insurgency and are bitterly critical of Iran and Russia's support of the Syrian regime.

Asked if Saudi Arabia could send troops to the Turkish border to enter Syria, Cavusoglu said: “This is something that could be desired but there is no plan. Saudi Arabia is sending planes and they said 'If the necessary time comes for a ground operation then we could send soldiers'."

His comments come after President Assad told AFP in an exclusive interview published on Friday that he would recapture the whole of Syria and keep “fighting terrorism”.

Turkey's relations with fellow mainly Sunni power Saudi Arabia have warmed considerably in recent months.

In December, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Riyadh for talks with King Salman as well as key decision-makers crown prince Mohammed bin Nayef and deputy crown prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Meanwhile, Turkey has also been tightening relations with Qatar, another key opponent of Assad in the Syria conflict.

Erdogan on Friday held several hours of talks in Istanbul with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the presidency said, but the contents of the talks was not revealed.

@PARIKRAMA what we were discussing.

On the topic , the Turkish Army is already shelling areas near Aleppo very heavily.
While Medvedev has said that an unwanted foreign intervention would mean an act of war against the state of Russia.

Yes as we talked on this, the whole offensive is now going a bit too wide.. I dont think all NATO forces are thinking in sync here..

As i said Putin will not remain quiet forever.. Nor as you pointed China as they dont wish this escalation too much beyond control..

The world is coming to a very grim reality.. If the Syria issues continues to work like a international conflict between different countries instead of a coalition working together, this will very well be the trigger point for a much larger International conflict..

This could well end up as a curtain raiser for a World War 3 if all sides dont come to some understanding...

Presumably Medvedev will now go on RT etc to announce that the Russian state is at war with Turkey--and incidentally NATO--and Saudi Arabia? I doubt it.

May be not. Because news is there that Russia has had talks with Paris and Berlin on these issues and , they have agreed to some mutually beneficial lines of action. So its not Russia vs NATO untill Washington backs the Arab Coalition directly.

You're suggesting that NATO would play directly into Putin's hands and allow him to declare war on a NATO member state and not take any action? You do realize that the consequence of that would be the disintegration of NATO itself, something which Washington has worked hard to prevent since the end of the first Cold War?

have they completed their Yemen mission successfully after expending large amount of money for fight and buying soldiers from abroad . with depleting oil price it will be challenging job for Turkey and Saudi if Iran and Russia start helping Isis to bleed Saudi and Turkey.

I literary do not know that what is it that Saudis are trying to achieve? They are indeed trying to show the rest of the Arab Countries that we are in business. This war isn't about Assad anymore, its about Ego and wining now, haven't you all noticed that they have decided to send ground troops after Assad's statement in which he vows that he will recapture the entire lost areas of Syria in no time.

And how did US Saudi Arabia and UAE reacted on his statement is kinda funny.

Saudi Arabia: If needed, remove Syria's Assad by force - CNN.com

According to Saudis if everything fails remove Assad, what everything? What is it that they want us to know but they are not telling us openly?

This Assad guy has made blunders too, I knew he will make such a stupid statement, and why should't he after all, under the leadership and complete support from Russia he has regain his confidence.

Yes, you are absaloutely right about this one mate!

In last few hours US has officially requested Turkey to halt Syria strikes while Russian PM has said that any agression towards Russian forces or allies will signal " Permanent War".
