Turkey has blocked Wikipedia, the country’s telecommunications watchdog has said, citing a law that allows it to ban access to websites deemed obscene or a threat to national security.

Later on Saturday, Turkish authorities said they had sacked more than 3,900 civil servants, and military and police personnel as the purge of alleged anti-government officials continued, and also banned TV dating shows.

The move to close down Wikipedia access is likely to further worry rights groups and Turkey’s western allies, who say Ankara has curtailed freedom of speech and other basic rights in the crackdown that followed last year’s failed coup.

“After technical analysis and legal consideration … an administrative measure has been taken for this website,” the BTK telecoms authority said in a statement on its website.

It cited a law that allows it to block access to individual web pages or entire sites for the protection of public order, national security or the wellbeing of the public.

BTK is required to submit such measures to a court within 24 hours. The court then has two days to decide if the ban should be upheld.

A block on all language editions of the online encyclopaedia was detected at 5am GMT on Saturday, monitoring group Turkey Blocks said on its website.

“The loss of availability is consistent with internet filters used to censor content in the country,” it said.

A shame however justifiable as the content authors of Wikipedia are select group of authors who practice complete biase in reporting on certain parts of history

Turkish government and its people have been under constant attack from international madia and Wikipedia is no different

Any hilbilly can modify a Wikipedia article and add few lines and if certain group of people are in control of higher editor designation they can dictate what part of history are dipicted in what angle.

I personally find Wikipedia informative but more and more the data on wikipedia is becoming politically altered

During certain portions of US-Afghanistan war , for example various articles that detailed US involvement in Soviet war , the stories were altered to show US was not directly involved
in the 70's war in Afghanistan. This happened during time when US was trying to win local support to go back in Afghanistan

A majority of independent bodies also noted that quite a few IDs of the authors seem to come from US and specifically their intelligence bodies who seem to be constantly snoping around articles and makes modification

Apart from the political minipulation in general I do find the importance of Wikipedia

Its called censorship. According to a close Turkish friend of mine, they had entire lectures held by Erdogan supporters who were technically brainwashing the people to be extremists and supporters of Erdogan, by justifying that if you support Erdogan you are a true muslim.
Its terrible over there and half of the population is pissed off while the rest are buying into this stupidity. Not only that but Turkey is blocking most media or news outlets so people can't know what is actually going on or what is the truth, so they have no other choice but to buy into this propaganda.

We should do the same. Wikipedia is completely dominated by hindutva contributors.
