The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) organized a series of workshops on Research Destination Turkey: European and National Funding Opportunities for Brain Circulation, R&D Cooperation and Research Career on April 10, 2012 in Maryland/Washington; April 12, 2012 in New York; on April 14, 2012 in Chicago, USA.
The event aimed at creating awareness on recent developments in the Turkish Research Area, the national and international research funding mechanisms for reintegration to Turkey as well as TÜBİTAK research institutes. Prof. Dr. Yunus Ali ÇENGEL, Advisor to the President of TÜBİTAK, invited the Turkish researchers residing in the USA to come to the Turkish universities or research performing industrial organizations not only permanently but also for short periods such as sabbatical leaves to enhance the research cooperation of Turkey and the USA. During the events, Marie Curie National Contact Point of Turkey, Tuğba ARSLAN KANTARCUOĞLU presented the possible funding opportunities provided by National and International funding Schemes to the participants. Lastly, actors of two different success stories, Prof. Dr. Adnan AKAY and Assoc. Prof. Sencer ECER shared their integration stories from the USA to Turkey by summarizing the process.
A total of 18 research organizations and universities have come together with 330 researchers under the scope of these events and stated their interest in hosting them if they decide to return to Turkey for both long or short terms. With the attendance of the representatives from the hosting institutions in Turkey, the workshops provided an ambiance where the researchers could contact with their future hosts.
