Trump slaps big tariffs on imported solar panels in major escalation of a trade fight with China

Interesting, US is resorting to the same tactic as that of India, which is also considering to hike tariff on imported Chinese solar panels. "Made in China" is threatening both high end and low end of market, all at the same time.

India is imposing duty on both Chinese/Malaysian and American panels.
US has already cried about it in WTO.

SEOUL, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's trade minister said Tuesday that the country planned to file a petition with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the United States for its "unfair" safeguard measures on South Korea-made washing machines and solar cells.

Trade Minister Kim Hyun-chong told an emergency meeting that South Korea will file a WTO petition against unfair measures, citing the U.S. government's safeguard on imported washers and solar cells.

U.S. President Donald Trump approved recommendations of the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) to impose heavy anti-dumping duties on the imported large residential washing machines and solar cells and modules, mostly from South Korean manufacturers including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics as well as solar panel makers.

Kim said the South Korean government will actively deal with the protectionist move, stressing that the government will win the WTO petition given the past cases.

He noted that the government and the private sector raised the issue with the United States over its unfair safeguard through multiple channels, but he said the United States made a choice after considering domestic political situation rather than international law.

Samsung and LG exported 1 billion U.S. dollars of large residential washers to the United States in 2016, accounting for about 30 percent of the market share in the United States.

South Korean solar panel makers exported 1.3 billion U.S. dollars of solar cells and modules to the United States in the same year, ranking third in the U.S. market.

Even Vietnam is going to be affected more than China.

Donald Trump isn't specifically targeting China, but the US media is uniquely obsessed with China.

Yep, the US Presidents all share the same goal which is to curb China's rise, but Trump's unique method is rather counterproductive.

China's eventual domination is imminent and inevitable. Even Obama had managed to pass the TPP, he would just postpone it at best, but now with Trump, he is simply accelerating the pace of China's domination.

Korea and Malaysia are rich countries, you too, less trades won’t make you poor. In contrast we are a poor country with hungry people, we need dollars. the US should make poor countries richer not poorer.

If you don't mention CHINA in your article, no one in America is going to read it.

China is important. Other countries are not.

China's economy is huge (comparable to the US). China consumes more energy than the US every year. China buys more cars than the US each year.

China is heavily industrialized. It builds stealth fighters, supercomputers, nuclear power plants, etc.

China is also economically growing a lot faster than the US.

In the view of Americans, China is a rival. No other country comes close.

Most Americans will not read an article unless it is related to China. Hence, the hype of American solar tariffs hitting China!
