Trump slaps 10 percent tariff on $300B more in Chinese goods

Another Kennedy died yesterday from drug oberdose.
Kennedy curse is so real. I don't believe it's coincidence. I do believe Kennedy made enemies and his enemies want to kill all the males and heirs of his family.

Trump may be arrogant, but he definitely want to live longer, and left fortunes to his heirs.

Saoirse Kennedy Hill is latest victim of the ‘Kennedy curse’

Federation?
Are you serious?
If you mean honestly Vietnam will certainly think about it.

But it’s unrealistic. The US and Japan will consider a China/Vietnam alliance as a hostile act. Donald Trump will impose tariffs on Vietnam, and Japan will withdraw all support to Vietnam immediately.

In a federation, Vietnam and China have equation position politically. Vietnam will not be a threat to China, China must revise the constitution and law to make sure violence against Vietnam is forbidden.

Chinese citizens and Vietnamese have equal rights, education, welfare, investment opportunities. Vietnam can keep military, your language, your constitution, culture and everything.

South China Sea will be shared for sure.

It's like European Union. France and Germany fought for so many wars in past thousands years. They don't have problems anymore. War between France and Germany is unimaginable.

Vietnam get much better developing neighborhood, Cambodia and Thailand are too weak to threat Vietnam.

History is just history, history textbooks in all countries serve the governance legitimacy as first priority. It's more or less fabricated, some issues are ignored intentionally, some issues are emphasized. No exceptions.

Sometimes, people only need to change their mindset, enemies can be the best friends. In Chinese "不打不相识"。

I do like Vietnamese more than any other ASEAN countries. Looking, culture, behaviors, mindset are identical.

. .
Wow but that is expected.

@Indos
@Marine Rouge
Beginning tomorrow a new wave of fleeing factories will go to your country. You should thank Vietnam. We are too full with factories unfortunately. At least for now.

I believe the trade war is not mean to improve US economy but rather to hurt Chinese economy by curbing its potential growth rate. It is a class of civilization rather than just a trade dispute. US strategies are already known that those manufacturing job that move away to China will not come back to US as it will just move to another emerging economies. The strategy comes from geopolitical point of view rather than economic one. I think many Republican are holding this point of view.

Whatever strategy he holds, Trump needs reelection more than ever. He can hold the hard-line policy against China as long as it serves his reelection campaign.

China can wait for 15 months and see the result.

Well he is making it quite "blue-dog" bipartisan policy as well. Larry Kudlow is a democrat traditionally after all.

Also, this is like the 3rd or 4th time that chuck schumer (senate minority leader - a democrat) has voiced full support to trump (on chinese tarrifs and more tariffs later if needed).

China has to see well beyond just Trump here.

US economy still grow around 2 percent so I think he still can hold this hard line policy even during campaign, the result will be different if US economy comes to recession due to the trade war policy.

Federal Reserve decreased interest, it means Trump do knew more incentive is needed to support his hard-line policy against China.

I agree the trade war so far didn't hurt US GDP growth much, but China foreign policy always prepare for the worst as well. As a Chinese, we would like suffer for short term to support our motherland for long term. But how long Trump's voters prepared to sacrifice?

I also agree trade war is not just trade war, it reflects the anti-China sentiment of Americans. Totally understandable. The Americans were brainwashed for decades that China will collapse sooner or later, now they knew China will surpass US sooner or later if they just wait and see.

It will take at least 10-20 years that Americans realize containment policy won't stop China but strengthen China. China has spent more than one hundred years to recover, 10-20 years is nothing.

"故天将降大任于是人也,必先苦其心志,劳其筋骨,饿其体肤,空乏其身,行拂乱其所为,所以动心忍性,曾益其所不能。人恒过,然后能改;困于心,衡于虑,而后作;徵于色,发于声,而后喻。入则无法家拂士,出则无敌国外患者,国恒亡。然后知生于忧患而死于安乐也。"

Mencius said, 'When Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man, it first exercises his mind with suffering, and his sinews and bones with toil. It exposes his body to hunger, and subjects him to extreme poverty. It confounds his undertakings. By all these methods it stimulates his mind, hardens his nature, and supplies his incompetencies. Men for the most part err, and are afterwards able to reform. They are distressed in mind and perplexed in their thoughts, and then they arise to vigorous reformation. When things have been evidenced in men's looks, and set forth in their words, then they understand them. If a prince have not about his court families attached to the laws and worthy counsellors, and if abroad there are not hostile States or other external calamities, his kingdom will generally come to ruin. From these things we see how life springs from sorrow and calamity, and death from ease and pleasure.'

it is unrelated to the thread
the trade war is still in place without any resolution

Topic seldom remains the topic, but thats off topic. 10% is not enough to bring China in line or move factories from China. A product out the factory door costs 5 times or more by the time it reaches the retail shelf.

Tariffs need to be much higher to make China rethink its policy. A toaster oven going to $45 from $40 won't make much difference to a customer. Higher tariffs will be detrimental to retail sales and stocks. The time to contain China has come and gone 10 years ago when their economy was much smaller.

China Trade (% of GDP)
64% in 2006, 38% in 2018.

Exports of goods and services (% of GDP)
36% in 2006, 19% in 2018.
China export to US only account for more than 4% of China GDP.

The best time to contain China has passed.

10 years ago they were busy with Al Qaida, Middle East and Afghanistan. Neo-cons are not far thinking individuals as they were assuming all other factors will remain unchanged.

Yep, 4% is really insignificant... And just take a look at Chinese market's contribution to American companies' revenues, like GM, Apple, Boeing, Nike, HP, etc. etc...., We can easily get every penny back and even let them pay more...

Trump should immediately put 100% or 200% of tariffs on all Chinese exports if he wanna do some real damage on China's export, while he is afraid to tank the stock market that will jeopardize his re-election.

And China's economy is still growing substantially. Therefore, the current tariffs would only be diluted over time as China's GDP is growing over time. The damage will be minimized.

China won't immediately lose 4% of export. The trade between China and USA will gradually be decoupling. And the US influence on China's economics will become more and more less significant.

Let's wait a while.

If China allow you suck oil within U shaped area of South China Sea, then you have a proof that China is weak.

If Vietnam withdraw, don't forget to apologize for what you claimed China is, and humiliation you spew out from your mouth again and again.

Would you take this bet?
Yeah, we can wait till 2023, Im not in a hurry.

Of course we will withdraw in Sept as we said, but we will be back and drill oil in 2023

Neo-liberals are not any better. China learn lesson from history, in my opinion, Neo-liberals are destroying US in different way than Neo-cons.

Just take a look at so called best politician in European Union - Angela Merkel, or super model Trudeau, those Liberals

What do you mean in 2023? Xi Jinping probably will NOT retire in 2023. also it's not Xi Jinping's decision to have a more assertive stance in South China Sea, it's because stronger PLA.

As long as China economy grow, PLA has more budget. Tbh, Vietnam is losing opportunities in future in South China Sea.

Btw, the real opponent in South China Sea was never Vietnam, it's US.
